Legend has it that a beautiful Multnomah princess gave her life to save her people by jumping off the high cliff overlooking the water of the Big River, now known as the Columbia River Gorge.

It was done in order to appease the Great Spirit’s anger by offering an innocent maiden in sacrifice. The silvery-white stream of water that sprung forth from the cliff formed Multnomah Falls, and was the Great Spirit’s token of peace between him and the people, following the princess’s death.

Standing near the upper pool of this enchanting place, it is easy to imagine the legend coming alive. The moist, fragrant air envelops you in its misty embrace, almost transporting you to a land of myth and mystery.

The air is moist and fragrant, with moss and lichen clinging to the rocky cliffs and trees along the trail

Multnomah Falls is the second tallest year-round waterfall in the United States. It is located in the state of Oregon by the Columbia River Gorge.

The waterfall is split into two steps, the upper portion which is 542 feet, and the lower is 69 feet.

Visitors can take a comfortable, easy hike up to the bridge overlooking the pool where the upper fall cascades, and then continue to the very top if desired, though the second part is much more challenging. There is a creek nestled among rocks and trees once you reach the top, and some visitors enjoy wading through the cool water as they catch their breath before moving on.

The trail is narrow, steep, but oh so very lush and lovely

It is 1.2 miles to the very top, comprising of steep switchbacks with beautiful views of the scenery below.

There are no fees to visit this beautiful place which is conveniently open year-round.

Multnomah Falls Historic Lodge

The historic Lodge boasts a full-service restaurant with a delicious menu serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. It also has a bar, and snack bar, a lovely gift shop below, and informative visitor center.

The sweet aroma of freshly made fudge and other tasty treats lure hungry visitors after a stimulating hike.

It is best to visit the falls early in the morning before it gets too crowded. This is not to be missed when visiting the Columbia River Gorge.

Many families chose chain motels or hotels for a vacation. The reason: a known quantity, size of the room, amenities such as a pool or video games for the kids, portable cribs for the smallest travelers. Another reason is: sure, we’d love to stay at a bed and breakfast, but most of them don’t welcome or aren’t suitable for children.

Here are two beautiful bed and breakfast’s that are perfect for families – as long as parents are willing to keep their eye on their offspring. I’ve always believed that part of the charm of a family vacation is to spend time with your family – not send your children off to hotel sponsored children’s program or plunk them in front of the television. If you feel the same way, these two stops are the perfect destination.

Hawaii’s Halaekilohana B & B

A view from Kalekilohana's front porch

Hawaii itself is a family friendly destination, and the Kalaekilohana Bed & Breakfast outside of remote Na’alehu, on the Big Island is a perfect example. Kind, welcoming, friendly hosts will feel more like friends than inn keepers by the time you leave, and the accommodations are stellar. We loved the massive outdoor lanai, or porch, perfect for conversation, a cool beverage, and star gazing. With a porch swing to rock the kids to sleep, first let the kids run out onto the vast, groomed lawn and watch the moon rise. Inside, the rooms are large, many with french doors and private lanais. Several family suites feature three queen size or king and queen beds each in a separate nook of the room. Smooth eucalyptus wood floors smell heavenly. This plantation style lemon yellow b & b offers craft classes such a lei making and basket weaving for older children and the entire family. There’s a true sense of the culture of the islands and a connection to it, and that warmth will be felt and welcome by kids of all ages, and their parents. Kalaekilohana is one of the only Hawaiian owned bed and breakfasts in the state of Hawaii.

The bed and breakfast itself – a welcoming Hawaiian plantation

Hawaiian music will play on the stereo while you breakfast on house made treats from pancakes to scones, local K’au coffee for adults, fresh squeezed juices, and island grown fruits like mango, papaya, and strawberries fill the table.

With a washer and dryer available for guests to use, you won’t have to worry about your family getting dusty on a pleasant hour-long hike to near by Green Sands beach. Centrally located between major Big Island attractions like Volcanoes National Park to the East and pristine snorkeling spots like Pu`uhonua `O Honaunau National Historic Park to the west, sightseeing as well as relaxing make this our number one favorite b & b.

For more information on this charming and family friendly B&B visit their website at: http://www.kau-hawaii.com or call (808) 939-8052.

Julian, California – The Observer’s Inn

Crisp winter days outside the Observer's Inn in Juilan - a little sledding with the star gazing

Well, maybe it’s a tie for number one, with our other favorite in Southern California - The Observer’s Inn, a small B&B in a spotless guest house that shares this Julian, California property with a private observatory built and operated by astronomer Michael Leigh and his wife Caroline. We love that families can rent the entire guest house – two bedrooms, two baths, and a living room, all with star gazing art, books, and video.

The planetarium Michael built offers a private star-gazing tour through the clear night air, first with the aid of a laser pointer and then with the assistance of four observatory class telescopes. Stools are offered for the kids to get a solid view of Saturn’s rings, Orion, the Pleiades, the craters of the moon – whatever planets are “in season,” you’ll see them sparkling, no matter how many light years away. You and your children will learn about the star clusters and galaxies under your gaze; the smallest children will enjoy just looking at the sparkling stars, and settling back on the comfortable couches in the observatory with a staff-provided cookie as a treat.

A Julian Sunset - just wait til the stars come out

If the wonder of this special outlook into the universe wasn’t enough, in the morning, breakfast is served right in the guest house at an ample dining room table, along with friendly conversation by your hosts. With a strong emphasis on fresh baked local pastries and lovely fruit and teas, after the family-style repast, you can stroll the relaxing grounds, or head into the quaint town of Julian to take a horse and carriage ride. Not far away is the famous Palomar Observatory, open for tours and a look at a telescope even more impressive than those at the Observer’s Inn.

For more information on this charming and family friendly B&B visit their website at: http://www.observersinn.com or call (760)765-0088.

Two Grand Runner-ups

One runner up favorite bed and breakfasts in our family include the charming lighthouse keeper’s home on the windswept Oregon Coast, Heceta Head Lighthouse, where family board games and a fire place keep you company, and guests can share a kitchen for evening dining, or stroll a pleasant, gently winding path to the lighthouse itself. Nearby: enormous sand dunes in the small town of Florence are made for coasting, rolling, climbing, and picture taking. For more info on the Heceta Head Lighthouse B&B visit their website at: http://hecetalighthouse.com/bed-breakfast

Another favorite B&B is the sparkling Trinidad Inn in northern California, whose peaceful luxury belies the rugged coast on which it is perched. Below the inn, tide pools beckon. Nearby, mighty redwoods tower.

Once you get started on bed and breakfast stays, you’ll want to discover your own special place – away from the corporate owned and impersonal accommodations you may have thought were your family’s due.

Our first stop was Lakeside Terrace Motel in Christmas Valley Oregon. Very clean. The facilities were very acceptable for the price paid, (about 60 for a family of five). The beds were comfy. We woke up in the morning and the kids loved feeding all the cheetos and doritos to the gaggle of geese and ducks that swarm the door looking for handouts. If it wasn’t a medium sized man made lake, it would feel a lot like a cabin at the coast… we’ll definately be back especially for the price.

Then off to the Cheveron gas station, where we found prompt service, charismatic cashiers, and some blessed little old ladies raising money for their church with delicious treats.

Not many people in town. Some very polite locals, farmers, and some out of town hunters.

I want to go back again sometime!

Our family left the coastal area of Oregon and the beautiful ocean beaches for the river – the Columbia River Gorge. Make sure to read about the start of our family fun Oregon Coast excursion as well as Part 2 in Southern Oregon. Just as magnificent in its own way as the sea, the wide windy river is vast and beautiful. The perfect base to discover the river area and the waterfalls, scenic roads, and historic spots throughout the area is the town of Hood River and the Columbia River Gorge Hotel.

Comfortable family suites and linked rooms with shared baths are available at this old fashioned, elegant, yet warm and comfortable destination. Kids will love the cage elevator and friendly operator, and the views from the rooms of gardens or river are beautiful. The gardens themselves and the entire property can fill an afternoon. Out on the river you’ll see windsurfers, boaters, and wake boarders. Hood River prides itself on a perfect confluence of wind and is a wind surfing capitol. In the garden itself you’ll find perfectly arranged plantings of both flowers and foliage designed to reflect all the seasons. There are broad grassy areas, fantastic river views, and even a small water fall on the property, the Wah Gwin Gwin or Rushing Water Falls behind the Hotel, which cascades beautifully two hundred and eight feet down to the river below.

Originally developed in 1904 by Bobby Rand, a Hood River pioneer, Rand sold the property in the 1920′s to Simon Benson. Benson helped build the Columbia Gorge Scenic Highway, and he had a plan to create a hotel worthy of the awesome natural scenery of the area. The hotel is worthy to this day. We loved our room, which was a small suite of two rooms connected by a hall and bathroom with a garden view. We also loved the hotel’s restaurant, with friendly service, a beautiful river and sunset view, and a wide arrangement of fish, meats, and vegetables including an excellently priced kid’s menu. In the afternoon, free cider for the kids and champagne for the adults and a fluid jazz guitarist in the lounge area add to the enjoyment of the grounds and view.

In the morning, the restaurant is justifiably famous for its multiple course breakfast, which can be purchased as part of your vacation package or bought a la carte. We were able to score an incredible deal that included the breakfast with the room rate, and the meal kept everyone going all day. Eggs, trout, pancakes, apple fritters that my kids compared to churros, oatmeal, towering fruit plates, biscuits with honey and fresh orange juice, all were among the offerings. The formal service was delightful – elegant, yes, but never fussy, and kids are always welcome in the room.

Thus fortified we left the hotel to tour all the areas of the Gorge waterfalls. A short drive packs in a great deal of scenery. The Columbia Gorge Highway is a destination in itself with stone walls and viaducts, moss and overhanging trees. It’s lush and lovely. Starting nearest to Portland, you’ll find Crown Point, considered the symbol of the Columbia River Gorge. The octagonal building with its copper dome includes a small museum, gift shop and interpretive display, and is open spring through late fall.

A feeling of being in a rain forest accompanies you as you drive past a number of beautiful falls all within a five mile stretch of road: Latourell Falls, Shepperd’s Dell, Bridal Veil Falls, and Wahkeena Falls. While each has an easy path for an up close look, our favorite was Wahkeena. Bridal Veil Falls has the most challenging trail – not difficult, but not for the youngest travelers.

Columbia River Gorge Oregon

Multnomah Falls is the most famous and most tourist filled. Six hundred and twenty feet high, it has few waterfall ‘peers’ – in fact, only three falls in the U.S. are higher. While a trail winds to the top of the falls you can stop at any of several look outs to snap awesome photos and get a good look at the beautiful rushing water.

Other sites include Bonneville Dam at River Mile 146.1, an impressive and awesome example of man made beauty. The Cascade Locks, named for the locks built in the late 1800s to guide boats past once difficult rapids, are another worthwhile stop.

Cross the Bridge of the Gods, another architectural marvel, built in 1926, to view the Columbia River from the Washington state side. It’s name reflects a Native American Legend; the crossing reveals the full vastness of the river.

Once on the Washington side, you’ll find broader, more open river views and rolling grasslands here than on the tree lined, more rain-forest like Oregon side. Train tracks parallel this side of the river, and we enjoyed roadside views of passing trains on land matching the boats on the water.

Columbia River Gorge Hotel Waterfall

You’ll also find the Maryhill museum a wonderful and eccentric collection that includes a Rodin collection and a full size replica of Stonehenge. There’s also a mixture of Native American art and artifacts and Romanian cultural icons in a well laid out classically styled museum. The Stonehenge replica was also designed by museum founder Sam Hill and it directly overlooks the river and train tracks. A moving peace memorial dedicated to locals who passed away in World War I, it’s also a great spot for photographs and hide and seek for the younger members of your party. We didn’t think Sam Hill would’ve minded.

Crossing back to the Oregon side, be sure and check out the interesting area history and ecology presented at the Columbia River Discovery Center in The Dalles. It’s justifiably billed as the Official Interpretive Center of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area, and its interactive exhibits will give you and your family hours of fun and learning.

Yesterday I began describing a coastal adventure based at Heceta Head Light Station near Florence, in wonderful Oregon. A second day’s coastal adventures can spin you north from Yachats. Take in the very famous, very large Haystack Rock – one of the sea stacks – on the open, flat Cannon Beach. This resort town is touristy but charming, with salt water taffy shops vying for space next to antique stores.

Your little ones will love the long beach and the great rock formations of which Haystack is the most famous. No small coves here, the beach goes on forever, and its easy contours are perfect for running, walking, or bringing out the pails and shovels.
For accommodations, you can easily continue to base your activities at the charming bed and breakfast plus communal kitchen at Heceta Head, but Cannon Beach also offers a plethora of lodging choices.

We stayed at the Cannon Beach Hotel which allows you to make choices within choices, a small historic hotel, stylish studio type apartments, or quaint cottages. We picked The Courtyard which offered a kitchenette ideal for preparing breakfasts or lunches in – we’re big on that for savings and convenience – a fireplace, and a very short walk to the wide expanse of sand that makes Cannon Beach such a pleasure.

The rooms are beautifully and spaciously laid out with large bathrooms, warm cherry wood furnishings, lovely linens and original art. Most rooms have patios or balconies, and it’s a quiet setting, a small building situated among galleries, cafes and restaurants, and a short walk to the downtown shopping area as well as the beach.

For a meal try The Lumberyard Rotisserie & Grill, which appeals to locals and visitors in a relaxed, casual setting. They have outdoor patio dining with a menu ranging from organic greens, fish, and chicken to high quality, fresh ingredient hearth-stone pizzas. Our kids loved the cornbread, made in a skillet. The emphasis on organic and fresh ingredients makes it a highlight. There’s plenty of antique, gallery, and even toy stores to browse, all of them family friendly. Whenever you’ve finished shopping and strolling, take a short drive south again – and west – clinging to the sea.

Off the beaten track, there is a lovely ocean loop drive to Oceanside and the Cape Meare’s Lighthouse. The road literally hugs the bay, so close you could pull to the side, open a car door, and wade in. Slowly, the road climbs to the beautifully preserved lighthouse with self-guiding tours and astonishingly deserted sea views. The lighthouse is easy to reach and the climb to the top via interior stairs is easy, even for small legs.

And if you skipped a meal in Cannon Beach, drive a few miles farther to the hamlet of Oceanside, where exotic sandwiches and coffees can be found at the Brewin’ In the Wind coffee shop. A real locals spot, friendly and funky, there are fruit drinks and hot chocolate that the kids will enjoy. And there are more enchanting, imagination firing coves for walking and exploring, too. We found this the ultimate in excellent beach combing for rocks and shells. Make sure you save some room in your vehicle and your luggage- you’ll find many of your best souvenirs just lying in the sand in this area.

Exiting the loop road, you’ll find cormorants wing overhead at the Yaquina Bay Lighthouse in Newport; another beautiful landmark to explore. In the same town you’ll find whales, sea otters and puffins at the Oregon Coast Aquarium. Well stocked and beautifully maintained, you and your kids will enjoy the exhibits. Reasonably priced, you’ll find over five hundred species in both indoor and outdoor exhibits. Our kids really enjoyed an undersea adventure area featuring sharks, and rays, and Swampland, designed to inspire an understanding of wetlands areas often ignored by standard aquarium exhibits. Featuring an alligator and a 12 foot anaconda, there are other exotics as well, snapping turtles, tropical fish, red tail boas and piranhas. Anaconda feeding is managed by two people and looks just dangerous enough to draw a few gasps from viewers.

And if its feeding time for your family, Newport is the “Dungeness crab capital of the world” and you’ll find lots of it in area restaurants. We enjoyed The Chowder Bowl, a comfortable spot with excellent chowder, and sweet, fresh crab. Steamer clams were also delicious.

If you have time for one more stop, check out the Salmon River fish hatchery near Newport. At this unique and friendly venue, workers are eager to show off huge salmon and the ways in which fish are hatched for release in the river. Not far away is the Sitka Center for Art and Ecology, a one of a kind organization. Stunning photographs, crafts exhibits from basket weaving to shell art, and artists and scientists exploring art and nature in cooperative projects all serve to make this a unique stop in a beautiful setting. From April to October the center offers craft and art workshops many appealing to all ages and using materials indigenous to the region. Check out their website for current offerings and information at http://www.sitkacenter.org

Beaches strewn with climbable driftwood… square topped rocks called sea stacks morphing out of the morning waves… caves and coves for your little pirates to explore… and lighthouses! That’s the southern Oregon coast near Yachats. The quickest route in is to fly into Portland and drive to the sea in under five hours; our recent trip traversed the entire coast of Oregon and Washington from LA to Seattle via Highway 101 all the way.

Sunset at Heceta Head

I’ll share more great spots on this epic drive in the days ahead, but today I’m focusing on the wonderful Heceta Head Light Station, just south of Yachats, the single most photographed historic light house on the coast. The beautiful light station grounds include the keeper’s house, half a mile below the actual lighthouse, both with commanding views of rocks, sea lions, brilliant azure sea or dark and stormy waves depending upon the season.

Regardless of the time of year, the six rooms of the keeper’s house are now a bed and breakfast. Kids will love running around in the fenced, flat, groomed fields and gardens surrounding the house, watching a sunset from the broad porch, or waiting ‘til the stars come out. And there are lots of stars with absolutely zero light pollution – shooting stars, quazars, pick your planet, you’ll spot it in the stellar sky. Bring your binoculars

The house is stocked with board games, a piano, and a spotless community kitchen ready for use with pots, pans, plates and condiments. Stop in Florence or Yachats for provisions and you can have a family meal in an amazing setting. There are two comfortable parlors with fireplaces and Duraflame logs for your use. The house is a national historic site and has been preserved as it looked when the light keeper’s house was in daily use, but this is no hands-off antique filled setting. You and your children will find the home welcoming and comfortable, with space for just your family or interaction with other guests. You’ll find an easy paved walk to the actual light house and plenty of benches, trails, rocky promontories as well as that porch and two comfortable parlors with fireplaces and Duraflame logs for your use.

Southern Oregon Coast

Some rooms are adjoining, with shared bath, making an ideal family suite. With the sound of the ocean waves hitting the cove below and the lighthouse beam grazing your four poster bed, or your child’s trundle, you’ll find an early night just the thing. And you want a good night’s sleep so you don’t miss the amazing breakfasts served up – seven courses with food delights like mango mousse, praline bread, and frittata made with fresh vegetables from the light keeper’s garden. Adults will revel in the nouvelle cuisine, and even if your kids don’t like one course, they will surely like the next. Delightful food for all appetites.

Sated, your family will enjoy a short drive down to the beach below Heceta Head. There you’ll find plenty of drift wood for fort building, climbing, and picture taking and soft white sand for castle making. Then move on down the road for the touristy attraction of squalling sea lions in the Sea Lion’s Cave – an elevator and stairs lead you down to a viewing spot of hundreds of creatures noisily hanging out on the rocks. Be prepared if you have a child of stroller age – you’ll have to put the stroller aside at the top of the stairs and do some hand carrying to get to the viewing spot. You can also view the sea lions farther down the road at a turn out, although not in close range.

More peaceful pursuits can be found at the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Center. The overlook trail just south of Florence, in the Jessie M. Honeyman State Park, is a great place to start, with a beautiful forested trail and towering dunes. This is part of one of the largest dune eco-systems in the world, formed between 12 and 16 million years ago. These vast dunes are like experiencing the Sahara – only in North America.

The overlook area features several viewing platforms and child friendly, easy trails which will lead you onto the dunes in under a half mile. Another mile takes you from dunes to open ocean with the dunes behind you. These dunes are thrilling, wide, white, and filled with private nooks and crannies. You and your family will feel like you have the whole sea coast to yourself. Shops in the towns of Florence and Yachats sell plastic toboggans. The soft sand makes an easier ride than snow, and no frost bitten fingers to worry about.

We brought groceries in from Florence for a picnic, supplemented with fresh cheese from the nearby Tillamook cheese factory. The factory also has tastings that my kids couldn’t get enough of, debating which cheddar was tastiest was a fine way to spend a half hour. Firehouse Subs in downtown Florence – begun by firemen – offer hearty sandwiches of all kinds at reasonable prices.

After lunch, head south for an hour to the historic old seaport town of Bandon, the cranberry capital of Oregon and an artist’s colony. Bandon is home to marshy, scenic cranberry bogs and The Cranberry Store – from chocolate covered berries to jell candies and pretzels, this well known confectioner offers more samples and great deserts for the drive.

While you nibble, stroll the quaint sea port shops of “old town” Bandon, with buildings dating from the 1930′s. Then, across the river from town, visit the Coquille River Lighthouse. It’s one of the only lighthouses ever to be hit by a ship – an errant schooner in 1903.

Between Bandon and Brookings you’ll see Southern Oregon’s unique sea stack rock formations just off shore. These thick rock “islands” are exciting to see whether you’re viewing them from the car, an overlook, or by taking a short trail to the beach. There’s often a good wind in this area, and our family enjoyed some kite flying along with our seaside stroll. At low tide beach combing is an Oregon past time. Kids of all ages enjoy the enormous sea anemomes, purple star fish, and other flora and fauna of the deep. Small, shallow sea caves line the coast and are fun to explore.

In the Port Orford Area there are wonderful, windswept, overlooks to view the sea stacks and take some memorable sunset photos. Pistol River State Park near Gold Beach has more overlooks and short child-friendly trails, and is an excellent clamming beach as well. Maybe you’ll opt to pick up your own dinner, fresh from the sea, and bring it back to Heceta Head for another home cooked meal. If you opt to dine out, try the Bridgewater – family friendly seafood from fish and chips to steamed crab in a historic but comfortable setting.

Your little ones will sleep soundly from all the beach exploring, allowing you some parlor fire place time to unwind. Just don’t stay up too late – in the morning, another bountiful breakfast will be waiting for you!
