It is one thing to walk along a path where people from centuries ago once traveled. But it is quite another to actually see the markings those people left behind; appearing as fresh and immediate as the day they were carved. Seeing the Waikoloa Petroglyph Field on the Big Island of Hawaii gives visitors an up close and personal opportunity to explore the island’s fascinating history.

The Waikoloa Petroglyph Field is one of the best preserved sites of its kind in Hawaii. Found just north of the border between the ancient kingdoms of Kohala and Kona, this impressive lava field has one of the largest major concentrations of ancient rock carvings in all the Hawaiian Islands.

People wishing to cross the border between the ancient kingdoms of Kohala and Kona needed permission to do so. While waiting, they would sometimes make simple encampments to shelter themselves from the elements within the caves and rock walls scattered throughout the lava field. The surface carvings they left behind may have been made to commemorate an important ritual, such as one of religious significance, or a birth, or other noteworthy event.

The numerous carvings are believed to date back to between 1000 and 1800 A.D., and depict figures of humans, animals, and religious symbols. Most of the carvings were chiseled into the surface using sharp and blunt hammering stones, while others were rubbed, pounded, or incised there.

I had the opportunity to visit this rocky field alone, and had it all to myself on a hot summer day when most tourists were lounging by the sea, the poolside, or indulging in the many attractions this beautiful island has to offer. With every step I took, I thought about the ancient ones who were here before me. I felt a secret thrill at their nearness, as though I could reach out, slowly draw back the thin veil of time separating us, and touch them. I could almost hear their steps, sense their thoughts, and feel the beating of their hearts with every breath I took. The same trade winds caressing my skin filled their lungs with air. The same sun beating down on my head, heated their path. For an exhilarating moment I was lost in time—somewhere between the present and past—an eternal NOW, existing, feeling, yearning, connecting with those who were here before me.

Where do the roads lead? Where do they come from? It is a mystery. This rocky field is desolate and abandoned, more so because I am alone, and yet I turn to glance around me, almost glimpsing the ancient ones, feeling their timeless presence. I wonder what secrets and mysteries the rocks hold. What have they heard, what have they witnessed? I ponder each step I take and wonder about those who came before me: where were they going, and where did they come from?

I see birds and lizards on my path and think that they too are descendants of the ancient creatures that came before them. Past and Present appear to merge as the veil is not only drawn back, but ripped away in a passionate moment. The experience is rather exciting. It is the kind of emotion derived from traveling back in time through ruins and ancient things, to feel the eternal human condition that unifies us all. Yes, that hot summer day was an experience to remember. Perhaps someday, another lone visitor will sense the presence of my fiery soul among the many who traversed that vast, desolate field, and step away with a sense of wonder as well.

The Grand Wailea Resort has lots of pools and water slides

The most striking aspect of Maui’s Grand Wailea Resort is its pools. They call it the Wailea Canyon Activity Pool, though that may be a gross understatement. The pool is actually nine pools on six tiers, all of which are interconnected by water slides and rivers including whitewater rapids, a rope swing, a sand beach, a toddler pool, six cascading waterfalls, caves and charming grottos, three Jacuzzis, a swim-up bar, the world’s first water elevator, and more. It is a veritable water park nestled among lush tropical gardens on the resort’s forty beachfront acres at Maui’s renowned Wailea Beach.

Pools with cascading waterfalls add to the charm of this amazing resort

Oh, and did I mention the Hibiscus Pool with its two Jacuzzis? This 4,850-square-foot watery haven is an adults-only (18+ years) pool. Because let’s face it: sometimes you want to take a quiet dip in a pool that is not overrun by squealing children. And what a pool. It’s gorgeous. We’re talking Mexican glass mosaic tiles that make you feel as though you’ve stepped into the private luxury villa belonging to a mogul in the tropics.

The accommodations are inviting and very comfortable

What else could anyone ask for? How about luxury accommodations with expansive views of the beach. And dining. And shops. As far as accommodations go, the beds are easily the most comfortable I’ve slept on in any resort. This is important because when you are active all day, you need a good night’s rest to recharge so you can get up and do it all over again. After all, vacations are only a few days, so you want them to be well spent, not just leave you spent.

The resort grounds are lush, fragrant and so beautiful

DINING

The resort offers multiple options so you do not even need to leave the premises. There is the Grand Dining Room with ocean views and an amazing breakfast buffet including an omelet bar, fresh fruit, cereals, waffles, freshly baked pastries, rolls, eggs, bacon, juices, coffee, tea and so much more. Guests can lunch poolside at the Volcano Bar & Grill. There is the casual Bistro Molokini for lunch and dinner, as well as the more elegant dining at Humuhumunukunukuapua (try saying that one time, let alone more than once) with fresh fish, lobster, savory meats prepared with a Polynesian flare, and locally sourced ingredients right from Hawaii.

The game room is a great place for kids to unwind after a long day in the pools

For parents with young children, kids 5 and younger dine free with a paying adult. This is only one example of the Grand Wailea’s commitment to families. It’s called the Kids Eat Free and Kids Dine All Day. The restaurants also have keiki (kids) menus which include a beverage, entrée and dessert.

DAILY ACTIVITIES

The Grand Wailea also offers daily activities for guests including arts and crafts like jewelry making, bath salts creations, custom-made pizza stations for kids, dive-in movie features, guided meditation and fitness, and much more.

Wailea Beach is gorgeous, and the water is warm

But there’s more. A spa and a fitness center make a stay here the ultimate in luxury, so there is no excuse for not staying fit in paradise. You can pamper yourself to a spa treatment if that is something which entices you. What is so lovely about the Grand Wailea is that there are a variety of options and activities to suit most tastes. Those who love partaking of activities can do everything from scuba diving to sport fishing, golf, hiking, ziplining, lu’aus, sunset cruises, helicopter tours and so much more. While those who prefer to slow down and savor the moment will find that this resort is the perfect place to lose yourself amid the sea’s spectacular vistas or a walk on the powdery golden sand.

The sun rises in tranquil splendor beyond the resort as seen from Wailea Beach

The Grand Wailea is located on Maui’s stunning Wailea beach, and is walking distance to offsite shopping and dining as well. Like its name implies, it is truly a grand resort in every way, and perfect for couples or families seeking a memorable vacation on the beautiful island of Maui. Take a little Hawaiian aloha home with you after leaving this piece of paradise.

Basking in the sun on pristine beaches, among lush vegetation, along the crystal-clear, diamond-sparkling sea describes a typical day in the tropical paradise of Maui. In addition to relaxation and sun bathing, the island offers plenty of other activities for young families. Planning to celebrate a Hawaiian birthday vacation? Take a break from shopping for birthday supplies at ShinDigz and excite over all the family-fun activities that you must take advantage of while in Maui.

Whimsical Whale Watching

Witnessing Pacific humpback whales in their natural habitat mesmerizes tourists, especially families and kids of all ages. GoHawaii.com describes the gorgeous seawater off the coasts of West and South Maui as calm and clear. This creates the perfect ocean environment for observing whales surfacing and showing off. You and your family can soak in breathtaking coastal views, breath in the breezy, salty sea air and admire beautiful marine life while on a whale-watching voyage. The historic town of Lahaina is known as Maui’s whaling village, and a variety of whale-watching tours launch from Lahaina Harbor during the winter months. The Maalaea Harbor is another option for whale-watching tours. According to MauiActivities.com, Maalaea offers two-hour tours led by a trained naturalist who provides educational facts about these majestic creatures.

Haleakala National Park Sunrise & Hikes

The stunning natural beauty of Maui alone will make your island vacation unforgettable. But dedicate one of your mornings to waking up early and journeying to the Haleakala summit to see an astonishing sunrise. If you’re on a summer trip, make sure you reach the summit before 5:38 a.m. During the winter, arrive no later than 6:55 a.m. While the sun continues to start the day, the gorgeous coalescence of the dynamic colors of dawn painting the blue sky among heavenly clouds will amaze you and your family. Make a morning out of the event and pack a picnic breakfast to eat in your car, or check out Longhi’s in historic Lahaina afterward. Continue to immerse your family in nature’s beauty with a hike on trailheads Halemauu or Keoneheehee throughout the Haleakala wilderness Area. NPS.gov also provides a schedule of events, such as an “easy, guided hike to Kuloa Point” and cultural demonstrations in Kipahulu.

Spectacular Authentic Luaus

In true Hawaiian style, experience a traditional luau with hula and fire dancers, fire knife performers and authentic Hawaiian cuisine. MauiHawaii.org recommends the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort luau on Kaanapali Beach for its kid-friendly atmosphere. Known as “Drums of the Pacific,” the Hyatt Luau entertains families with echoing Hawaiian chants and a traditional Imu ceremony. Guests will enjoy exotic fare, such as Kalua Pork and Polynesian Rice, musical performances and art demonstrations among lit torches and the beautiful Hyatt landscape. Also family-friendly, the Grand Wailea Maui Luau along the south shores of Maui is a local and tourist favorite. The Grand Wailea Resort Spa hosts one of the best Hawaiian fun-filled extravaganzas that immerses guests into South Pacific culture, folklore and chanting. With a tropical sunset backdrop, your kids will have the time of their lives watching fire dances while wearing shell leis.

Don’t forget about indulging in a delicious buffet that includes Imu Baked Kalua Pig, Hawaiian fried rice and Taro Rolls.

Many families chose chain motels or hotels for a vacation. The reason: a known quantity, size of the room, amenities such as a pool or video games for the kids, portable cribs for the smallest travelers. Another reason is: sure, we’d love to stay at a bed and breakfast, but most of them don’t welcome or aren’t suitable for children.

Here are two beautiful bed and breakfast’s that are perfect for families – as long as parents are willing to keep their eye on their offspring. I’ve always believed that part of the charm of a family vacation is to spend time with your family – not send your children off to hotel sponsored children’s program or plunk them in front of the television. If you feel the same way, these two stops are the perfect destination.

Hawaii’s Halaekilohana B & B

A view from Kalekilohana's front porch

Hawaii itself is a family friendly destination, and the Kalaekilohana Bed & Breakfast outside of remote Na’alehu, on the Big Island is a perfect example. Kind, welcoming, friendly hosts will feel more like friends than inn keepers by the time you leave, and the accommodations are stellar. We loved the massive outdoor lanai, or porch, perfect for conversation, a cool beverage, and star gazing. With a porch swing to rock the kids to sleep, first let the kids run out onto the vast, groomed lawn and watch the moon rise. Inside, the rooms are large, many with french doors and private lanais. Several family suites feature three queen size or king and queen beds each in a separate nook of the room. Smooth eucalyptus wood floors smell heavenly. This plantation style lemon yellow b & b offers craft classes such a lei making and basket weaving for older children and the entire family. There’s a true sense of the culture of the islands and a connection to it, and that warmth will be felt and welcome by kids of all ages, and their parents. Kalaekilohana is one of the only Hawaiian owned bed and breakfasts in the state of Hawaii.

The bed and breakfast itself – a welcoming Hawaiian plantation

Hawaiian music will play on the stereo while you breakfast on house made treats from pancakes to scones, local K’au coffee for adults, fresh squeezed juices, and island grown fruits like mango, papaya, and strawberries fill the table.

With a washer and dryer available for guests to use, you won’t have to worry about your family getting dusty on a pleasant hour-long hike to near by Green Sands beach. Centrally located between major Big Island attractions like Volcanoes National Park to the East and pristine snorkeling spots like Pu`uhonua `O Honaunau National Historic Park to the west, sightseeing as well as relaxing make this our number one favorite b & b.

For more information on this charming and family friendly B&B visit their website at: http://www.kau-hawaii.com or call (808) 939-8052.

Julian, California – The Observer’s Inn

Crisp winter days outside the Observer's Inn in Juilan - a little sledding with the star gazing

Well, maybe it’s a tie for number one, with our other favorite in Southern California - The Observer’s Inn, a small B&B in a spotless guest house that shares this Julian, California property with a private observatory built and operated by astronomer Michael Leigh and his wife Caroline. We love that families can rent the entire guest house – two bedrooms, two baths, and a living room, all with star gazing art, books, and video.

The planetarium Michael built offers a private star-gazing tour through the clear night air, first with the aid of a laser pointer and then with the assistance of four observatory class telescopes. Stools are offered for the kids to get a solid view of Saturn’s rings, Orion, the Pleiades, the craters of the moon – whatever planets are “in season,” you’ll see them sparkling, no matter how many light years away. You and your children will learn about the star clusters and galaxies under your gaze; the smallest children will enjoy just looking at the sparkling stars, and settling back on the comfortable couches in the observatory with a staff-provided cookie as a treat.

A Julian Sunset - just wait til the stars come out

If the wonder of this special outlook into the universe wasn’t enough, in the morning, breakfast is served right in the guest house at an ample dining room table, along with friendly conversation by your hosts. With a strong emphasis on fresh baked local pastries and lovely fruit and teas, after the family-style repast, you can stroll the relaxing grounds, or head into the quaint town of Julian to take a horse and carriage ride. Not far away is the famous Palomar Observatory, open for tours and a look at a telescope even more impressive than those at the Observer’s Inn.

For more information on this charming and family friendly B&B visit their website at: http://www.observersinn.com or call (760)765-0088.

Two Grand Runner-ups

One runner up favorite bed and breakfasts in our family include the charming lighthouse keeper’s home on the windswept Oregon Coast, Heceta Head Lighthouse, where family board games and a fire place keep you company, and guests can share a kitchen for evening dining, or stroll a pleasant, gently winding path to the lighthouse itself. Nearby: enormous sand dunes in the small town of Florence are made for coasting, rolling, climbing, and picture taking. For more info on the Heceta Head Lighthouse B&B visit their website at: http://hecetalighthouse.com/bed-breakfast

Another favorite B&B is the sparkling Trinidad Inn in northern California, whose peaceful luxury belies the rugged coast on which it is perched. Below the inn, tide pools beckon. Nearby, mighty redwoods tower.

Once you get started on bed and breakfast stays, you’ll want to discover your own special place – away from the corporate owned and impersonal accommodations you may have thought were your family’s due.

If you asked your children where they wanted to go for a vacation that was also a holiday present – what would they say? Well, many kids will just follow the magic mouse and say “Disneyland.” And many parents, if asked, would say, oh, some place relaxing and warm – like Hawaii.

Rock out croppings on Oahu's West Side make for wonderful wave watching

If you’re looking to combine the two into a kind of ultimate Christmas present vacation for parents and kids alike, it’s actually doable these days on the west side of Oahu. The beautiful new Aulani resort combines Disneyland style fun and imagineering with its warm Hawaiian setting and true Hawaiian style. Not an inexpensive vacation retreat, it nonetheless offers great beauty and great child-friendly attractions in a neat package with a great view.

With both hotel rooms and time share units to choose from, the Aulani offers luxurious, spacious accommodations, a calm beach, and plenty of Disney fun.

The Disney vibe has absorbed rather than distorted the laid-back Hawaiian feeling island travelers love, and has also worked with Hawaiian heritage to replicate architectural and cultural themes throughout the property. Of course, your children probably won’t care about any of that. They’ll be too busy having fun.

We loved entering through thatched roof huts, and being greeted with flower and kukui nut leis. The lobby is visually stunning with a high ceiling from which light that look rather like jelly fish dangle in fishing nets. Best of all was a mural of island life that rings the lobby. The room itself was well designed, with Hawaiian sea-life designs on the furniture, headboard, and in the bathroom, but it was honestly a bit compact for our taste. And we probably could’ve done without the Mickey Mouse characters hidden, Waldo like, in the pattern of a quilt with a pineapple design. However, that’s me the curmudgeon, talking. The small children in our party loved finding Mickey. The hotel has suites and adjoining rooms available for larger families.

But who’s going to spend a long time in the room when outside is the grand ocean, and several wonderful, kid-friendly pools. With a saltwater pool for snorkeling lovely stocked native fish, an enormous pool with water-park amenities, and spas geared for both the young and adult travelers, there’s plenty of outdoor activities available and accessible for all ages.

An elegant, well appointed, but compact Aulani room

We loved the way the pool featured a faux volcanic rock plateau with sea life carvings part of the rock. The kids loved the water slides, including one that began on the crest of the volcanic rock for inner tube rides. For my taste, the best part of the pool was the long “lazy river” that traverses the resort grounds. However, voted best by kids of all ages was the saltwater snorkeling lagoon. This is a safe and delightful environment to experience snorkeling, and the stocked fish are colorful and profuse.

Children from ages four to ten will enjoy the kids club, Aunty’s Beach House. There were hula lessons, lei making, and supervised pool play. Older kids will enjoy the star gazing nights and pool parties at the Painted Sky Spa.

For the holidays though, you may just want to relax with your family around you – and the Pau Hana room offers craft making and games for the entire family. Also for everyone to enjoy: the Menehune Adventure Trail. Check out a GPS rigged cell phone and follow the clues on a hunt for menehune, the Hawaiian equivalent of leprechauns. There are over three hundred tiny, gnome like statues scattered about, on the grounds, in elevators, and around the pool. The modified cell phone activates mechanized menehune to emerge from hiding places behind rocks and bridges, and trigger an LCD TV lava flow. Crafted with all the Disney skill the kids could see at Disneyland itself, this was a great addition to the trip and added a lot of value to the resort’s Disney experience.

We loved walking along the soft sand of uncrowded Yokohama Bay State Park on Oahu's west side.

Paddleboarding and surfing lessons are also available in the relatively calm waters off the resort’s coast for parents and older children, and if you’re looking for more adventure, take the half hour drive up the West coast of Oahu to the end of the island’s paved road at Yokohama Bay State Park. This beautiful, wild enclave has lush green mountains, fine white sand, and completely uncrowded beaches, plus picnic areas, changing rooms, and friendly lifeguards. The surf can be tumultuous here, and we use this beach for walking rather than swimming. One rocky point mid-beach offers mini waterfalls cascading down its sides as the waves come in, and gave us a great excuse to linger and watch the sunset. One caveat here: outside the park there are unregulated encampments; you won’t want to explore there, nor will you want to stay in the state park itself too long after dark.

But then, why would you? You’ll want to drive back to the resort and enjoy a family-friendly movie floating in an inner tube in the pool; or a torch lit dinner at one of the hotel’s many, excellent restaurants. And take a little time congratulating yourself on creating the ultimate vacation holiday gift: Disneyland and the Hawaiian Islands – all rolled into one.

Our entire family loved the view from this Kauai helicopter ride.

Helicopters and toddlers…hmm. You’re probably thinking this might not be the best way to explore a Hawaiian island destination. And yet, taking the Ultimate Kauai Adventure Tour was perfect for everyone in our party – from adults to kids ranging in age from three to twenty. By taking a helicopter tour, we were able to comfortably explore the parts of Kauai unreachable by road or foot. Boats were out due to our children’s ages and safety concerns, which also ruled out the long hikes or hiking and kayaking tours to explore the unspoiled but difficult to visit, roadless Na Pali coast. So how else to see the remote and stunning Na Pali, the heart of Waimea Caynon, the often televised, dramatic Wailua Falls, or rich green Mount Waialeale?

Everyone has to make their own choice of course, but I can’t recommend highly enough the friendly pilot, the warm staff on the ground, and awesome adventure of swirling high above these fantastic sights. Along with the fabulous scenery, we were able to hear Hawaiian legends and island lore related by our pilot. Our family filled the helicopter, so it felt like a private tour. Yes, taking a helicopter tour is a fairly major financial investment, but it is a thrilling experience, and some tour operators offer substantial discounts for a full helicopter, or even free rides for the smallest children, those under age five.

We were nervous before boarding. None of us had ever been in a helicopter before, and we had safety worries. They were unnecessary. The good natured staff weighed us and then seated us in the ‘copter based on our weight and height. Blades already whirring overhead, we ducked inside the helicopter. The kids were all excited, not nervous at all, it was the adults and older siblings with the butterflies in our stomachs. We were strapped safely in, glass doors enclosed, cameras at the ready – and then we were smoothly aloft. We were also concerned about noise, fearing that the steady whirring of the blades could disturb toddler ears. But the noise canceling head phones carefully adjusted for all size ears truly did work. All nervousness fell away as our helicopter left from the airport area near Lihue, and soared upward. We had a great view of town and the tarot fields and lush gardens just outside of it at take off. The coast line looked beautiful from here, and we began to relax and enjoy the ride.

The Rich Green Mount Waialeale

The little ones were absolutely exultant. They watched the scenery eagerly, and loved the sensation of ‘being like a bird.” The older kids loved the adventure too. In other words, the trip was a splurge, but it was also a true hit for the entire family. Instead of a long boat trek and worries about sea sickness and swimming safety, we were gliding across the most beautiful country side, with amazing views from all the floor to ceiling glass in the helicopter. The ride was forty five minutes, long enough to be thrilling and give us our money’s worth, but brief enough to prevent the smaller children from becoming restive. The seats were comfortable – one really could simply lean back and enjoy the ride.

Our first airbourne ‘stop’ was Waimea Canyon, which though smaller than its Arizona cousin, rivals the Grand Canyon for breadth and depth and in simple wow factor. To fly over lush green fields and broad aqua ocean views to reach this raw slice of red and gold canyon was an exciting transition. And getting a swooping, bird’s eye view of the canyon that we’d visited by car the previous day offered a fresh and delightful perspective. The little kids even said they ‘recognized’ some of the look outs we had seen the day before. Best of all was the sensation of going briefly in, as well as over the vast gorge.

Our next “from the sky view” as our toddle termed it, was of Mount Waialeale, which is called the wettest place on the planet. Having an average measured annual rainfall of forty feet makes this claim difficult to deny. The greenery was lush, and sweeping over it and then spinning past a series of waterfalls was another highlight.

Approaching the Na Pali Coast by helicopter was thrilling.

But best of all was our sweeping view of the Na Pali Coast. The untouched, enormous cliffs with fan like folds was everything you see in photographs and more, and seen from an aerial perspective, the aqua sea, the emerald foliage, the tall, imposing cliffs and white sand beaches was so breathtaking that every one of us fell silent and spell bound. We took an afternoon tour, and the late afternoon sun made the coast line dazzle as we headed back toward the civilization of Lihue and the landing pad.

While touch down was gentle, the only caveat to taking a helicopter tour with a toddler is disembarking – you do climb out of the heli while the blades are still turning over head – not that your toddler is tall enough to reach them. Still, the noise and just seeing the blades spinning might disorient or frighten some little ones. Ours thought this was the most exciting part, and the only difficult moment was getting everyone to stand still in one place for a photo in front of the helicopter.

After the ride, we made one stop on land – the north shore’s lovely Postcards dining establishment. Located in Hanalei, this charming restaurant is housed in an old fashioned, plantation style dwelling painted in lemon and white. The restaurant neatly served our family’s diet – with vegetarian, vegan, and pescatarian options that utilized island-fresh, delicious produce and fresh catch of the day. What they don’t include on the menu is meat, refined sugar, or additives of any kind. Customizing dishes for our party was no problem, and roving ukelele musicians added to the festive atmosphere, making a wonderful conclusion to our high flying day.
