Gnarled live oaks hanging with Spanish moss, unspoiled beaches, and a diverse population of birds, plants and animals including wild horses live at Cumberland Island National Seashore. At 17 miles long by 3 miles at its widest point, this Atlantic barrier island is found off the coast of Georgia. Nature lovers will delight in its white sand beach, dunes, tidal mudflats, creeks, marshes and sun-speckled woods. It was once owned by the Carnegie family whose mansions still stand on part of the island, as do moss-clung ruins that only enhance the wild romance of this place. It can be reached by ferry from St. Mary’s, Georgia.

Congaree National Park – South Carolina

Congaree National Park

The old-growth trees at Congaree National Park in South Carolina steal the show here. Second only to California’s giant sequoias in height, the trees are the tallest around. This protected wilderness is home to river otters, heron, flying squirrels, box turtles, wild boar and close to 200 species of birds. Walking through the magnificent old-growth oaks, beeches, sycamores and bald cypresses is like stepping back into prehistoric times. Part of the hiking trails are on elevated boardwalks due to the natural flooding of the area several times a year. With its meandering creeks, swampy floodplains and sunlight drifting through the soaring arched canopy above, one can almost imagine dinosaurs inhabiting the area.

Fall Creek Falls State Park – Tennessee

Fall Creek Falls State Park
photo by Brian Stansberry / CC BY-SA 3.0

Fall Creek Falls State Park is a scenic wonderland with dramatic natural formations including secluded trails through oak, hickory and mountain laurel trees, caves systems, swing bridges over gorges, limestone sinkholes, and streams met by cascades and waterfalls. There is backcountry camping (by permit) as well as an inn with restaurant, and cabin rentals. This state park has a wild and rugged beauty that is a haven for hikers.

George Washington National Forest – Virginia, West Virginia

George Washington National Forest

There are many places named after the first president of the United States, and George Washington National Forest is one of them. Its accessibility to city folks draws people who love the majesty of the great outdoors. Stretching along the Appalachians with deep valleys, wooded ridges, and rivers, this is a wonderful place for fishing, horseback riding, hunting, canoeing and camping. It is also one of the best places to hike, as the panoramic views are simply spectacular, especially when autumn approaches and the leaves change into dazzling colors.

Green Mountain National Forest – Vermont

Green Mountain National Forest
photo by U.S. Department of Agriculture / CC BY-SA 2.0

This wilderness wonderland encompasses more than 620 square miles of scenic beauty. It has everything from rugged mountains and forestation, to wetlands, ponds, streams and lakes. There are three major trails along with a network of smaller trails that are perfect for hiking, cycling, horseback riding, and snow sports in winter like snowmobiling, cross-country skilling and snowshoeing. Camping, boating and fishing are also to be found here. This is a great place to see wildlife like moose, black bear, white-tailed deer, beavers and turtles. The surroundings are breathtakingly beautiful.

Not far from the beautiful urbanity of Charleston, South Carolina, and the spooky beauty of Savannah, Georgia lie the barrier islands of the Carolinas. Recommended to us as a wonderful place to recharge, rest, and spend some family time in a beautiful setting, we took a side trip to Edisto Island this past summer.

Edisto Island Beach

Edisto Beach

The road in, Highway 174, is part of the fun. Your kids will love the large and beautiful oak trees draped in Spanish moss, and the magical feeling of the coastal villages on the barrier islands. Besides the sea, you’ll find beautiful streams and marshes a plenty, interesting small shops, and miles of unusually lovely open space to explore.

You can drive, walk, or bike through the islands, and while you decide on your mode of transportation, you can taste some wonderful key lime pie at the SeaCow Eatery before heading off to beach comb for seashells or go for a swim or a walk along one of the pristine Edisto beach sand spots easily accessible just off the highway.

Our Experience

We rented a one bedroom cottage near the small town of Edisto Beach, and we did most of our eating in, packing picnics supplied from the local Piggly Wiggly grocery store and fresh fish items from Edisto Seafood. My older kids also rented bikes at Island Bikes, young children may prefer simple strolls on the soft white sands. Early morning finds herons pecking at the marsh grass and a bountiful wash of sea shells and small stones to collect. We even found a few sharks teeth, a pretty amazing find for the little ones. When you get tired of beach combing, take the kids inland to the charming Edisto Bookstore, with an eclectic collection of books about the island itself and a rich children’s collection.

Pink Van Tours – History Made Fun

You can also walk or drive the back roads to beautiful old homes built on the cotton industry of the early eighteen hundreds. A company called Pink Van Tours offers excellent guided plantation home tours, and while our children were patient with the history, they were most enthralled by a stop for fresh lemonade and benne seed cookies. Our guide told us the lemonade was made from an old family recipe, and it tasted it, sweet and tart at the same time. The tour was a little over two hours, but the variety of sights to see will keep little ones interested even if they’re not absorbing the full history of the place. We stopped at lovely churches otherwise inaccessible to the public, and two plantation homes. Older kids will be as fascinated as adults by the collection of stories about the Civil War era, ghosts, crop planting, and settlement history. We were also able to view many beautiful homes from the outside as well, giving us a full picture of island life from our comfortable perch in a bright pink van. Reasonably priced, there was much to like about spending an afternoon in guided exploration.

Other Family Activities

For a completely different sort of experience, try the Edisto Island Serpentarium. The reptiles here are not hidden behind grubby glass; they’re roaming in exhibits designed to resemble their natural habitation. There are shows and feedings, and the kids are allowed to pet or hold some of the snakes and reptiles. We had a great time watching the snake show and the alligator feeding.

The second day we took to the trails of Botanty Bay Plantation. Here we found the skeletal remains of two beautiful homes, Seabrook and Bleak Hall – a name I found reminiscent of something from Jane Eyre. We headed for Botany Bay Beach, a lovely stretch of unspoiled sea reachable only by walking or biking. The kids were fascinated by the remains of oaks which were tossed here during hurricanes past, and provided great climbing.

Windswept trees and soft white sand - Edisto is a peaceful family paradise.

Edisto State Park is another rich natural resource. Here the trails lead across boardwalks and bridges, through marshlands and beneath beautiful trees. A good portion of the park runs along the ocean, but facing inland you can take a trail to the Indian Mound, a four-thousand-year old collection of bones and shells left by the Edisto Indian tribe long, long ago.

Also in the park you’ll find an environmental learning center with a small but impressive collection of information about the flora and fauna of the park.

If you want to learn more about the environment, try Botany Bay Ecotours. This private company offers kayaking, boat rides, and lots of interesting information about the flora and fauna and history of the Edisto area.

There’s just something about Edisto that makes it a sweet spot to spend some family time. Maybe it’s the beautiful beaches, the quiet woodlands, the rich history of the old homes and churches. Maybe its the friendly residents, the small shops, the fresh fish to grill. There’s a laid back feeling to the island that makes it easy to just relax, walk, explore the beaches in the early morning and again at sunset. Or maybe it’s just the sunset glinting off the water in a quiet and lovely place devoid of chain restaurants and fast paced resorts. Your family will have lots of fun on this beautiful, peaceful island.

From museums to the skyline of it’s historic center, there’s plenty to see and enjoy.

Charleston, South Carolina is a genteel city. Polite. Adults hold the door for you and your children’s strollers, and hotel employees pat your child on the head. If you like history, historic recreations of river boat steamers, horse drawn carriage rides, a beautiful water front city, a lovely nearby beach, and plenty of courtesy, then Charleston is for you. You always feel welcome. That’s to get you in the mood for the genteel urbanity of this town.

Our kids of all ages enjoyed exploring the beautiful mansions and plantation style residences in this lovely town. We took it easy, simply enjoying all the styles of architecture. It makes a wonderful walk under leafy trees to wander past stunning homes built in styles as diverse as Victorian and Colonial. The houses exist both because they were protected by a 1930′s era preservation act and because the town was for awhile, too poor to demolish these old beauties in favor of modern homes. Their temporary loss is our gain – the dazzling old homes are still standing, and the once shabby properties are now pristine, and ready for tourist consumption. Some are open for tours, some for actual stays.

The Battery Carriage House Inn is a beautiful Bed and Breakfast, and while we went the chain motel route for this visit, this property looks gorgeous. Also nearby is the Palmer Home, another bed and breakfast in a great location with views of the Atlantic. You’ll want to be sure that the b & b you select, if you choose this route, will accommodate children, as some have a twelve and up restriction. If you come in the Spring, you’ll find this historic area fragrant with flowers. Dogwoods and magnolias are everywhere, and our kids collected fistfuls of fallen blossoms.

Walking past the mansions of Charleston made a great afternoon

We took a long time strolling through this historic district, visually stunning, and all those friendly strangers on the street smiling at our children. When you tire of the architectural view and graceful gardens, check out the shops on downtown Charleston’s booming King Street. It would be hard not to enjoy Honest John’s Record Shop – which sells, yes, vinyl, but also gardening services and pickled pigs feet in a jar. B’zar is a different sort of store, and features upscale Kidrobot toys which are as appropriate for grown up gift giving as for kids.

We had a large and enjoyable late lunch meal at the Hominy Grill, operating out of what was once a barber shop with modern twists on country classics, like a BLT made with fried green tomatoes. While our vegan ended up with an interesting compendium of side dish vegetables, carnivores will delight in the updated take on fried chicken and gravy. The restaurant is stylish but child- accommodating, and reasonably priced, just like the rest of the city.

Just outside of town, you’ll find the Magnolia Plantation. Highly tourist-centric, this 17th century property actually opened to visitors just after the Civil War era. While some would call it kitschy, we loved the place and felt that was part of its charm. There were alligators in a cypress swamp, a petting zoo with adorable baby sheep, a tram to ride, and a Biblical Garden to explore. The adults were able to gain some insight into the living experience of the Civil War era from the slave quarters to the main house ball room. There’s even a nature boat tour across a small lake. A can’t miss, full family pleasing attraction. We also enjoyed a look at Middleton Place down the road, where flowers were fully in bloom and there was a vast amount of green space for the kids to run around.

I highly recommend visiting the nearby beaches. We headed for Folly Beach just outside Charleston, but stopped first at Freshfields Village, a charming collection of shops and restaurants on the way. Here we heard a local band play jazz on the Village Green, had ice cream treats at Vince’s soda shop, and packed up on some beach-going goodies at the Farmer’s Market which runs weekly. We also found beach island residents selling hand-woven sweet grass baskets, a craft that’s been passed down through generations of islanders, and of course we purchased one as a souvenir.

Folly Beach is located on a barrier island only fifteen minutes from downtown Charleston. A beautiful beach, with soft sand and gentle, rolling surf, the small town also holds the Morris Island Lighthouse, a photographer’s landmark. We lazed on the sand most of the afternoon, but still found time to head back into town to check out some of the museums on the city’s aptly named “Museum Mile.”

A serious but fascinating stop was The Old Slave Mart Museum with exhibits on the domestic slave trade that dominated the region. It presents a legacy of African American culture, as well as information about the practice of slavery itself, including planter’s diaries and field worker tools.

A lighter stop for younger travelers is the Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry, a wonderful interactive Charleston experience allowing kids from infant to age ten the chance to climb a pirate ship, enter a medieval castle, or find Charleston-area produce and goods at a Market.

Our kids also enjoyed exploring the Postal Museum contained in the oldest continuously operated post office in the Carolinas. If you’d like your offspring to consider a future in stamp collecting, this is the place to get them started. And as they say frequently in Charleston – thank you for coming in.

Planning a family friendly beach vacation with young kids during Spring Break can be tricky. How do you find a spot that offers a wide range of attractions and activities to keep your family happy, yet is as far away as possible from loud, teenage Spring Breakers with a slightly different idea of a happy vacation? This was the puzzle we had to solve earlier this month as we planned the Spring Beach Vacation we had promised our young daughter

After some initial scratching of heads, we set out to select by elimination. And so – what may have been great choices if we didn’t have a 4.5 year-old to please – Panama City, Miami, Myrtle Beach & Daytona – were quickly crossed off from our list of potentials and we zeroed in on Hilton Head Island, in South Carolina. It seemed like just the right mix of sun, sand and family fun we wanted minus the raucous spring breakers that we were eager to avoid. And within driving distance from home.

Hilton Head Highlights

Beaches worth biking on

Biking On Hilton Head Beach

One of the most enjoyable aspects of a Hilton Head vacation is the biking experience. Miles and miles of bike trails around the town plus endless stretches of sandy beaches invite you to cruise along all day. Biking on the beaches of Hilton Head is a truly relaxing and rejuvenating experience – pack a picnic basket and beach towels and you’re all set for a day of biking, sun bathing, sand castle-building and chilling on the beach. Biking on the beach means that you can cover longer distances than you ordinarily would on foot. It also gives you the freedom to stop wherever and whenever you feel like and take a dip, build a castle or just relax for a while before you head out again to explore some more. If you have young kids, there’s no better way to enjoy long stretches of the beach, than by strapping them to the child carrier seat and riding along, stopping for snack breaks and for water play as and when you want to.

High Tide on Hilton Head Beach

Do be prepared for the changes in beach trails brought about by the change in tides! We were met with a wide stream of ocean water when we were trying to get back to our hotel at the end of our long biking trip. What was once all sand just a little while ago was now uncrossable by bike due to the high tide, especially with a child. We ended up retracing our steps and traversing around the impase through a different route to return to our hotel.

With sand so soft, can you help but build a castle?
We had to remind ourselves that we were only helping our daughter build the castle, but even we weren’t convinced. The sand on Hilton Head beach is so soft and inviting that even adults can’t resist building sand castles and playing!

Sand castle in progress

Beauty doesn’t stop at the beach
As I mentioned earlier, it wasn’t just the beach that offered plenty of biking opportunities. The whole town is very bike friendly with wide trails running parallel to almost all major streets. People living here probably don’t even need to use their cars to get to work or the grocery store as most everything is accessible by bike. Lush greenery in the form of palm and pine trees, and breathtakingly beautiful golf courses are some of the vistas you will be treated to as you bike along the streets of Hilton Head. With not too many gradations to conquer, biking here is an enjoyable, stress-free experience.

You can’t help but lead a healthy lifestyle
We noticed that many of the locals used bikes to get to stores, restaurants and even to work. So while the rest of us are stuck struggling with rising gas prices, high cholesterol and weight issues, Hilton Headers are happily biking their way to a healthier lifestyle while saving on fuel and having the last laugh as they head to the beach.

Bonus trip to Upscale Sea Pines
It’s unlikely you will ever get enough of the beach and the bike rides, but at some point in your vacation, do peel yourself away and head to the scenic Sea Pines area. You do have to pay a toll of $5.00 to get there, but you would have recovered the toll amount’s worth of sights and fresh air within a few minutes of entering inside this community. The calming combination of serene tree tunnels, more golf courses, bike lanes and fresh air is invigorating to say the least. The Sea Pines area is popular for its dining and shopping, but as we were soon to discover it had another little surprise in store for our little girl.

A trip to Lawton Stables and a surprise pony ride
Our car literally screeched to a halt by this beautiful place as we were passing it. Not originally on our list of spots to visit, something about the horses and ponies that were at an arm’s length away from the road beckoned us to stop and say Hello. Our daughter snagged a surprise pony ride on Romeo, a gorgeous white Pony who happily strutted around the track pleasing his tiny rider to no end. We also met Callie the llama and got to pet a few of the other animals on the farm. The place does offer guided trail rides on horseback through across the 603 acre Sea Pine Forest Preserve for those 8 and older if you’re interested.

Harbor Town Light House – Historic and refreshing
The final stop on our trip was the Harbor Town Lighthouse and marina. The 90 foot red and white striped lighthouse is fairly easy to climb with just a little over a hundred steps, and offers a spectacular view of the area around. The gift shop, aptly named The Shop at the Top and the pier below surely warrant a visit. Do ask about the guided kayak tours if you’re interested.

Hotel & Dining
As you may expect, there are several options when it comes to accommodations in this tourist friendly, family beach town. We stayed at The Marriot Resort and Spa by the beach and were mostly pleased with our choice. We were disappointed that we didn’t snag an ocean front room and even the ‘Ocean view’ that our room had was an obscure one since our room was located at the far end of the building, away from the ocean. So, do plan your trip ahead of time so you don’t miss out on an oceanfront room. The amenities, location and facilities on the premises turned out to be rather impressive. The hotel offers hourly and daily bike rentals which was one of the reasons we chose this place. The hotel also boasts four restaurants/cafes on site – we loved The Cafe for breakfast. They have a hearty breakfast buffet and some great options on the menu.

We didn’t check out Conroy’s as they didn’t have too many vegetarian options, but for seafood lovers, you probably will find that the in-house restaurants have a great variety to offer between the four of them. They also have a grocery store where you can grab your daily dose of caffeine and a quick donut or muffin if you’re not interested in a full sit-down breakfast. An easily accessible complimentary beach towel booth, an indoor pool ideal for younger kids and a larger outdoor pool area facing the beach, in-house massage and spa facilities, a well-equipped fitness room and 3 golf courses on the premises are some of the other reasons to love this place. The fact that our room didn’t have a microwave or a great ocean view and that parking cost us an additional $10 a day were some of the black spots in an otherwise perfect vacation.

At the end of the day – we had managed to accomplish it – a spring break beach vacation without having to endure brash spring breakers. Though the water itself was cold and not all that inviting, there was plenty more Hilton Head had to offer that kept our family happy for 3 days and left us with memories to last a lifetime.
