The Wild Felid Advocacy Center of Washington is a wonderful place to meet some of our planet’s fascinating wild cats. It is dedicated to conservation through education, animal welfare, and by providing a sanctuary for captive born or wild born wild cats in need. My family and I had the opportunity to visit this beautiful sanctuary recently, and it was certainly a highlight of our stay in Washington State. The sanctuary is currently home to 59 cats, including bobcats, lynx, cougars, servals, tigers, hybrid cats, and more.

Meet Buddy. Buddy is a fifteen-year-old male bobcat. Doesn’t he look cuddly? Bobcats are named for their short, bobbed tails. They mainly hunt rabbits and hares, as well as birds, mice and squirrels. They can pounce up to ten feet when hunting.

This lovely lady is a female serval called Meeka. Servals have the tallest ears among all cats. They also have the longest legs in proportion to their bodies.

Kiki is a thirteen-year-old male Eurasian Lynx. Note the characteristic tufts of black hair on the tips of his ears. Did you know that the Eurasian lynx is capable of taking down deer? In the wild, deer and other hoofed animals are their preferred prey.

Meet Suri and Tabbi. Both are gorgeous four-year-old female tigers, each weighing over 300 pounds. Tigers eat about eight to ten pounds of food daily. Talk about eating you out of house and home! That’s not cheap, but they are certainly worth it. Look how they are cuddling here.

This is Harley. Harley is a two-year-old male cougar, and he’s just as cute and playful as can be. Cougars are capable of taking down something ten times their size. They are also very acrobatic. Cougars are the largest purring cats. While they are born with lots of spots, their coats acquire a uniform tawny color as they mature.

Crackal is the resident caracal. He is three years old. Like the lynx, caracals also have tufted ears, and are sometimes confused with lynx because of this. The two can be differentiated by their coats: the lynx is spotted while the caracal is not. Caracals are sometimes called the “desert lynx” although they are not related. They move fast, are great hunters, and their ears rotate independently of each other. Another fascinating fact: caracals can jump thirteen feet straight up into the air from a sitting position! Wow.

Turbo is a gorgeous six-year old male leopard. Leopards are native to Africa and are known as the most intelligent of the big cats, capable of strategizing and planning when hunting or avoiding capture. They are also very strong, and carry their prey up into trees so that it will not be taken away from them.

Meet Snickers, an eleven-year-old female Gordon’s Wildcat. Gordon’s wildcats look so much like domestic cats in size and build, but they’re not. These are Arabian wildcats: powerful and quite ferocious compared to your average housecat. No, they don’t make good pets, but are wild, and must be treated with the same respect and dignity as all wild cats. They prey mostly on rodents, reptiles, small birds and occasional insects as well.

The Wild Felid Advocacy Center’s passion is evident in all the work and time they dedicate to these gorgeous creatures. HIKING TRAILS

The road less traveled…

There are three scenic hiking trails right on the property, all of which I explored again and again to my heart’s delight. They are easily accessed right outside the Lodge. But the best part is the feeling of seclusion. Even in the high season months while I was there, I had the trails all to myself.

The trail is wide in some places, and then narrows, meandering through the property’s forest, up and down small hills that give one a great workout.

I don’t know if anyone else gets as excited about moss and lichen as I do. Perhaps it’s just my own oddly romantic nature.

Moss clings to the tree trunks and drapes from the branches, and the ground is carpeted with pines needles and leaves that crunch softly underfoot. The air is so fresh, fragrant, and richly oxygenated, my cheeks were flushed a deep crimson by the time I finished my hike.

Rocks and small boulders are covered with patches of lichen which look almost like guano. An abundance of ferns and lush vegetation lend it a prehistoric appeal. I could almost imagine I was in Jurassic Park.

The wooded path twists and climbs through the stately trees, while a gentle breeze rustles the birch leaves, making them shimmer in the dappled light.

Beautiful views are everywhere

The resort’s golf course lies nearby, but one only catches a glimpse of it on occasion when the trail curves along its edge. There are also tranquil ponds fringed by cattails, reeds and a profusion of flowers and grasses which delight the senses with their rich, earthy scent. Ducks and turtles swim among the water lilies there. The ponds are a serene green color.  I half-expected the Lady of the Lake to rise from their emerald depths to give King Arthur his sword Excalibur. It’s so enchanting, it sent my imagination on an adventure of its own.

I can go on and on about the trails, but even hikers need to eat.

There are two on-site restaurants: the Cascade Dining Room and River Rock, with the seasonal outdoor Greenside Grill located at the golf course. The Greenside Grill’s hot dogs, incidentally, are amazing, with grilled onions and relish. The Cascade Dining Room has a tasty selection of fresh fish, steaks, chops, soups and appetizers like pan seared scallops (a personal favorite), roasted beet and smoked goat cheese salad, and mushrooms sautéed in garlic, shallots and thyme. The River Rock features a more casual fare for sharing. Things like salads, pizza, and burgers are prepared fresh, and full bar awaits.

The resort’s thoughtful little touches like complimentary gourmet coffee and Tazo tea in main lobby, and complimentary fresh crisp apples in the Gorge Room by the lobby add an inviting touch.

Skamania Lodge is a place I would not mind visiting again, especially for the hiking trails on the gorgeous property. I love the remote feel of the resort, and enjoy losing myself in all the natural beauty. It is also a great place for this writer to set her imagination on fire. Oh, the romance of nature. It always does that to me.

Alaska Zoo

Located in Anchorage, Alaska, the Alaska Zoo features a wonderful variety of animals native to this region. There are reindeer, moose, musk oxen, polar and brown bears, wolverines and wolves. Visitors can see a wide collection of birds of prey including owls, hawks and eagles. The zoo is also home to exotic cold weather creatures including Tibetan yaks, snow leopards, Amur tigers and double-humped Bactrian camels. Hawaii’s tropical climate makes the Honolulu Zoo on the island of Oahu the perfect place for animal species indigenous to the tropics. Birds, mammals and reptiles from three major habitats are showcased here. The African Savannah habitat includes chimpanzees, giraffes, zebras, rhinoceroses, lizards and a walk-through aviary. The Tropical Forest habitat features monkeys, tigers, elephants, Komodo dragons and colorful birds. Situated on 133 lush sprawling acres in Griffith Park, the Los Angeles Zoo & Botanical Gardens is home to over 1,100 birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and more than 800 species of plants. Its 100-acre location by the Pacific Ocean offers families fabulous exhibits, a scenic nature trail, shows and programs, miniature steam train, carousel, bird sanctuary, playground and recreational area. The Children’s Zoo has its own exhibits including an Insect Zoo where kids can observe and learn about creepy crawlies in fascination. From tropical rain forests, to the African savannah, to the Pacific Northwest, the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle, Washington houses about 1,100 animals in its award-winning naturalistic habitat exhibits. Watch jaguars in a lush tropical forest; see lions, hippos and zebras in the grassland plains; hand feed tropical birds as you walk through the Willawong Station where over 150 colorful birds fly free; listen to Madagascar hissing cockroaches and katydids, or observe desert millipedes and scorpions in Bug World. Children will love the Family Farm (seasonal), with its petting area that includes goats, rabbits and sheep, and the nature-themed Zoomazium where they can have fun expending energy in a playground, enjoy stories, arts and crafts, and live animals. The climate in Portland, Oregon can be rainy, but even in a light summer rain, walking along the walk-able byways of the city can be a pure delight. The Willamette River runs through the city and its pleasant paths bring in walkers, joggers, and cyclers on both sides. Our favorite strolls were along the recently built Vera Katz Eastbank Esplanade, a one and a half mile floating walkway.

It’s green, it’s lush, it’s quiet, well-traveled enough for safety even on a twilight stroll, the river is lovely and there are peaceful spots to stop, take in the view, and just enjoy the misty morning or afternoon. There are ten bridges spanning the river, making for picturesque photo spots and a fun counting game no matter how long your route. Over all, Portland contains over 220 miles of regional trails which tie together to draw people through the city and its many green spaces. Portland lends itself to family strolling even outside the pleasant river banks.

We also loved Powell’s City of Books, a monument to all things written and the perfect place for a writer to take her kids. You can log a lot of miles inside this vast book store, containing probably as many titles in its aisles as Amazon.com features on line.  It’s a prime tourist attraction with over a million books, both new and used. Extensive children’s section, friendly staff, and the awe inspiring feeling of being in a vast library of books you can actually buy, make this an excellent afternoon activity.

Another great place for strolling and browsing are the streets that make up the Pearl District, once a run down section of Portland warehouses and now an artist’s enclave. On First Thursday (the first Thursday of each month), the forty plus galleries in this half mile “gallery walk” are packed with browsers, and the wine and cheese scene may prove too formidable for a family with small children. The galleries are there any day of the week however, and mid-week finds them quiet and receptive. We loved the mix of modern art, sculptures, craft-oriented displays and friendly gallery owners who responded to kid-questions about colors chosen and what some of the more ‘out there’ assemblages represented with alacrity. Along with the galleries and artistic shops, you’ll find the  stone turrets of the 1891 National Guard armory, to explore.

Abutting the Pearl District is the neighborhood known as Old Town. Here you’ll find a wonderful piece of gentrification – a former gas company parking lot is now the beautiful Portland Classical Chinese Garden. The garden was built as an urban oasis by designers from Portland’s sister city, Suzhou, China. We loved the peace and quiet behind the garden walls which seemed to offer an insight into a Chinese cultural mind set. When we were there the garden had twilight music concerts on tap, as well as offering the opportunity during daylight hours to participate in games such as yo-yo spinning and mah jong. Offerings, like the flowers in bloom, are seasonal, but regardless of the time of year, this is a great place for another walk that the kids will enjoy exploring.

And speaking of gardens, check out the fragrant international rose test garden in Washington Park. Portland is well regarded for its roses, beginning in the late 1800′s with the establishment of a rose exhibit in the gardens of published Henry Pittock and his wife Goergiana. By the turn of the century, Portland began to plant roses on many streets, until there were over two hundred miles of rose bushes during the Lewis and Clark Centennial celebration. The International Rose Test Garden we enjoyed exploring was founded in 1924, and became an official site to test All American Roses for growers in 1940. There are over ten thousand gorgeous roses growing here. There is also an iconic fountain, and plenty of pleasant paths to meander. Today the park is a pleasure to walk, and when the roses are blooming, the kids love smelling the varieties of floral scents and the riot of color everywhere. Just be careful not to touch the thorns!

We stayed in the recently rehabbed Hotel Modera, with smallish but trendy, modern rooms. It was a pleasant retreat to rest our slightly weary feet before dinner, enjoying the blazing firepits in the hotel’s commodious courtyard with sodas for the kids and some Oregon wine for those in our party of the appropriate age. The fire pits may be hip in style, but the allure of a damp night warmed by a glowing fire is as timeless as the river and the grassy paths we so enjoyed walking along.

Dinner was also relaxing at the classic seafood house Jake’s Famous Crawfish, a dining landmark established in 1892. We loved the fresh organic salads just as much as the crisp salmon and cod. Service was fast and efficient and the wait-staff was glad to split orders for the kids.

Mountains, rivers and lakes have beckoned with their rustic appeal for ages. Sparkling bodies of water, towering trees, and breathtaking vistas renew the human spirit through the splendor of nature. The signature hot springs with their rich minerals provide countless benefits to mind and body. Ranging in temperature from 85°F to 106°F, there are six that can be enjoyed year-round on the property: inside the restored 19th century Bathhouse, under the stars at the source, in the pool outside the Bathhouse, in the pool behind the Dunton Store cabin, inside Well House cabin, and out on the river (Christoph’s spring).

Served at the Saloon – with its decorative embossed tin ceilings and long antique wood table – mealtimes are a warm and lively event for gathering throughout the day and recounting adventures. The deliciously prepared cuisine is made from local organic foods, many of which are grown on the resort’s own farm and vineyard. All meals and beverages (alcohol & non-alcohol, with exception of the Reserve List) are included in the rates.

The area around Forks is roughly 2,000 square miles bordered by oceans, meadows and rain forests, and divided by many beautiful rivers.

We stayed both in the town of Forks and at Kalaloch Lodge. Kalaloch is a special part of the Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary. Islands barely visible above high tide hold large protected bird colonies, birds you won’t commonly find elsewhere like tufted puffins. Although many people visit Kalaloch and its serene lodge, it doesn’t seem like a tourist spot. It’s isolated, the lodge settled on a cliff above a vast, sandy beach. The water is too cold for a swim in summer – at least for us, California natives. But the beautiful views of sweeping sea scape and rocky peninsula makes it a wonderful coastal walk. There are also easy hiking trails along the bluffs. The lodge is not luxurious, but comfortable, and its beach front setting is simply lovely. The restaurant at the lodge is merely adequate, which is all it needs to be considering the splendid view from its windows and warm, wood paneled walls. Soups are a specialty and meals have a general Pacific Northwest bent, with plenty of fish on the menu. A plus: the lodge will make smaller portions for smaller diners as well as offering a standard kid’s menu.

More rustic accommodations are available at the natural mineral waters of Sol Duc. Many of the cabins have kitchens. The mineral waters are soothing and family friendly, and the area is lushly forested.

In the town of Forks there are a variety of motels; we chose a condo rental with kitchen. The town itself is now big on tours featuring Twilight locations, probably of no great interest to small children. It’s a good place from which to reach Ruby Beach or La Push, an ocean front tribal community with ocean bluff walks, Quileute Native American Headquarters and a small museum.

Where state road 112 ends is Neah Bay, another Native American community on the Makah Indian Reservation. There’s a larger museum here with literally thousands of archeological artifacts from an Indian Village, many of them over three thousand years old and uncovered in this region. In late August the tribe holds a Makah Days celebration with fire works, dancing, canoe races, and a traditional salmon bake.

In Forks itself is the Timber Museum. Here tools and other historical items tell the story of the logging industry from the mid-eighteen hundreds. A replication of a bunk house, showing how loggers lived was particularly worth seeing. If you ever wanted to learn anything about loggers of the past and their tools of the trade, the Forks Timber Museum is the place to stop. The museum displays exhibits depicting local history dating back to the 1870s. An interesting side note: the building was constructed by the Forks High School carpentry class. It’s not every town that has students with enough wood working experience to construct a thirty two hundred foot structure.

From Forks, it’s less than half an hour to reach Rialto Beach, rocky and scenic, with great views of the off shore sanctuary islands. The sunsets here are wonderful, and the kids loved picking and tossing rocks into the water. The quality of light here is special, reflected off the water. Some of the lighter colored rocks seemed to hold the sunset colors, which was a wonderful ‘trick.’  There’s great driftwood for gathering here, too. The kids wanted to experience it all again the second night, but we’d moved down to Kalaloch. Although the distances are not many in miles here, night driving in this area is very dark and the roads can be slippery, even in summer, and we preferred to stay in one location at night.

Entering the Olympic park proper, there are several nearby destinations. To the North east, you’ll find Hurricane Ridge, a forested, mountainous spot with excellent wild life viewing – we saw elk and deer, and a bald eagle. The elk is unique to this area, named after President Teddy Roosevelt. Bring binoculars, and watch the skies for many beautiful birds.

Exploring the nature trails in the Hoh Rain Forest

To the South west is the Hoh Rain Forest. With over twelve feet, yes, feet, of rain every year, this is a lush, so-called temperate rain forest. The thick forested growth includes tall hemlock trees, Douglas-firs and spruce. Closer to the ground there are tall growth ferns and moss, which brings me to the Hall of Mosses, a trail in the Hoh Rain forest where everything shimmers with a kind of incandescent damp greenness. It’s an easy trail just three quarters of a mile in length, and the kids will love the jungly feel and dense, overhead green leafy canopy. Although there are over three thousand plant species here, according to the ranger at the visitor center, it’s the towering spruces and hemlocks that leave the strongest impression.  We really enjoyed the gentle loop trails, fallen logs ripe with lichen and moss, and the soft hanging green leaves and mosses virtually everywhere. They were curious about the damp odors of co-mingled growing plants and natural forest decay. Pristine streams criss-cross the area, and signage makes the trails easy to follow.

It’s a sad contrast to this great forest in the protected National Park, to see timber-lands completely cut down to serve the lumber industry. Ecologically speaking, as one drives south on Highway 101 from the Hoh Rain Forest area, the severely over cut road side forest is a cautionary lesson for the kids to preserve nature rather than over use it.

The ferry ride itself is a lot of fun, leaving just outside downtown Seattle, it’s easy to drive on board. There’s something particularly enjoyable about a car ferry, stepping out of your own vehicle to watch the prow of the ship cut through the waves. There was a small snack bar on board and the views of islands and Seattle slipping away behind us was lovely. 

The town dates from 1792, and the gorgeous old brick and stone buildings show off these historic roots. We enjoyed seeing the John Quincy Adams House and Good Templars Hall; even more we enjoyed staying in the heart of the historic district and a block from the Puget Sound at the Palace Hotel, built in 1889. We had a huge third floor room – warning, there’s no elevator – with a kitchen, a small living area, and bedroom. The ten foot arched windows offered incredible town and water views, and while the rooms feature antiques they’re comfortable antiques – you can climb on the sofas and turn on the lamps, and the kids will not feel inhibited here. 

Inside the Palace Hotel, Port Townsend, WA

In the 1800′s, shipping tycoons and businessmen raised up grand homes and businesses. But when the economy boomed elsewhere – when the Northern Pacific Railroad neglected to connect the city to Tacoma- the wealthy builders left, the buildings escaped change, and now downtown Port Townsend is a designated National Historic District. We loved the mix of galleries, antique shops, gift shops, cafes and coffee houses. Port Townsend is a Victorian doll house come to life. 

The kids were also welcomed in the many galleries around downtown. We made it to the monthly Arts Walk, and were impressed with the sophistication of the paintings, sculptures and ceramics on display. There were of course standard seascapes and landscapes, but there was also decidedly unique modern art, Asian fused glassworks, and wonderful Native American styled carvings. We were even more impressed by the friendliness of the artists; one landscape painter showed our kids how he works in layering paint and mixing his colors. Jazz music spilled from cafes; fresh carrot cake was served at food stands set up on the street. The Rose Movie Theater is a classic structure, showing well-chosen art house and family fare at reasonable prices. We loved it’s old fashioned feeling and friendly concession stand operators. 

In the morning we liked strolling along the Puget Sound and taking in the blue water, circling sea birds, and fishing craft from our chosen perch on a comfortable bench.

By afternoon, we’d found some delicious sandwiches to go at Panedeamore, an Artisan bakery with excellent bread and pastries, and we decided to leave our Victorian era enclave for the wilderness. 

Washington’s stunning, snow capped – even in summer – peaks,  deep valleys, pristine waterfalls, and three hundred plus glaciers are all a part of the North Cascades National Park. Divided into three separate regions, we headed up to the hills. We had a tie for a favorite stop en route: lavender farm and blackberry picking. 

At Purple Haze lavender farm and store, we were treated to that amazing floral aroma and a cup of sweet lavender ice cream. We bought armfuls of the dried flowers that we selected ourselves from inside the cool, damp barn. We came home with lavender soap, salad dressing, and candy as souvenirs. We found out there’s a beautiful three bedroom house available for rent on the property; if you stay your family is invited to pick any produce, including the lavender growing on the property. We’ve made a note to come back – or at least we hope to enjoy the purple fields again, soon. 

Blackberry picking was purely a roadside event. We saw the plants. We stopped. We waded through some wild flowers and weeds, we picked and we ate. For the kids, this was quintessential natural grazing, delicious and delightful. 

Driving up into the Cascade mountains, the views are of beautiful forest land inhabited by cedar and fir trees. Some of the last large stands of old-growth forest in the U.S are here in the forests of the Cascade Mountains. A ranger told us that some of the Western Red Cedars are over a thousand years old, and many of these ‘old ones’ rise up to two hundred feet from the ground. 

We enjoyed several trails near the visitors center, easy, tree shaded, with ferns and wild flowers, mosses and lichens easily observable. We needed jackets even in the summer when the afternoon grew later; maybe it’s due to the seemingly perpetual snow cap on the mountains, but in the shadows there’s a significant chill in the air. 

Back at sea level and close to downtown Port Townsend, we explored the Port Townsend Marine Science Center, with touch tanks and knowledgeable docents eager to discuss the sea life in the Puget Sound. Also located in Fort Worden State Park, is the Commanding Officer’s Quarters, which features late Victorian and Edwardian furnishings and offers a nicely presented look at the life of a U.S. Army officer and family in the early twentieth century. 

Fort Worden is also home to sights familiar to viewers of the Richard Gere/Debra Winger romance, An Officer and a Gentleman. The film isn’t appropriate for small kids, but checking out the filming locations at the Fort after fast forwarding through a free VHS copy provided at our hotel was a lot of fun. 

Downtown again it was time for some pizza and pasta at Lanza’s cozy Italian bistro; followed by desert and live jazz at the Upstage Restaurant and Theater which allowed kids in the listening room until ten p.m. 

Just as the fog started to roll in across the sound, we were tucked in our antique filled suite again, looking out toward the faint lights of boats bobbing in the harbor.

Ballard Locks Seattle

We actually did have some sunshine our first day in Seattle, sparkling blue skies and fresh air – it was just interspersed with bouts of rain and mirrored with often lake-like puddles. But our second day was completely dry, and we took advantage of the fine weather, spending most of the day outdoors.Our first stop was the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks, off the beaten path in Ballard, and sometimes called the Ballard Locks. By any name, this historic site links boats bound between the ocean – the Puget Sound – and the fresh water of the Ship Canal that connects to Lake Union, Lake Washington, Salmon Bay, and Portage Bay. Built in 1911 to allow smooth transport of coal and lumber by boat, today they’re still working, but they’re also a well known pleasure attraction. Tourists and locals alike gather around the locks to watch a veritable parade of sail boats, schooners, tugs, barges, yachts and motor boats. With street performers providing a musical background, vendors selling ice cream and pretzels, you can spend a surprising amount of time watching all those varied boats enter into the locks, and wait while the water level is adjusted for their safe passage in either direction, to the lake or sound. Sometimes the crowd even cheers.   

Another enjoyable past-time in the same location is the so-called fish ladder, built to let salmon to pass between fresh and salt water. You can see the fish through glass panels as they navigate  through the ladder. It’s quite a journey as they adapt to different levels of salt in their water at each “rung.” Our kids spent a lot of time watching this pretty fascinating navigation.

After a morning at the locks, we headed back to ‘our’ neighborhood. Rather than spending much higher down-town Seattle prices, we opted to stay a fifteen minute drive away from the Pioneer Square area, in a neighborhood adjacent to the University of Washington. Our choice was the elegant Watertown, with a full compliment of large rooms with larger baths or suites that are perfect for a family. When we were there the Watertown even offered a family package of pizza and movies for relaxing after a full day of sightseeing. The rooms are stylishly appointed, modern, and many have beautiful sky line views of the Space Needle and downtown. The complimentary breakfast buffet was good too, with lots of fruit, local pastries,  and scrambled eggs. The hotel also provided free van shuttle service to downtown, leaving you at several locations like the Space Needle or Pioneer Square if you don’t want to hassle with downtown parking. We used it twice; despite a short wait for return pick up it was efficient and reliable. Near the hotel is the student-focused Araya Vegetarian Place, a Thai restaurant with a really good and inexpensive lunch buffet Monday through Saturday. Another fun spot is the University Village shopping area, a good place for al fresco dining. Our kids especially enjoyed the Tokyo Treats ice cream deserts, but there are also plenty of casual restaurants, outdoor tables, and a nice mix of locally owned shops and galleries and some upscale national chain stores. A nice touch for family is a free story time, crafts and activities for kids. Called Playdays, the activities vary weekly and if you attend one you can get discounts or two for one coupons for shops and restaurants in the Village.   

Also nearby was the University campus, with child-friendly green space and the fascinating world class Burke Museum. It contains collections of natural history and cultural heritage for the entire state of Washington, and features well done interactive exhibits and nicely displayed and organized artifacts. We learned about geology, Native American art, and the early settlers in this region. The totem poles and wooden boats on display were truly awesome, and the kids loved the color and large scale of these items.   

As much as we enjoyed the collection, the sunshine was so alluring that we headed back to downtown Seattle to take a narrated cruise from the waterfront to Blake Island State Park. Although it’s just eight miles from Seattle’s water front, the island is accessible only by boat. Most people arrive by taking a cruise line, which is what we did.

Named for Captain George Blake, commander of an 1837 U.S. Coast Survey vessel, Blake Island State Park was also an ancestral campground of the Suquamish and Duwamish Indian Tribes. It may also be the birth-place of Chief Seattle. This heavily forested island has five miles of pretty beaches, and quiet wooded walking trails. You can take a long walk, or a short one, and many of the trails closest to the landing area are stroller friendly. We spotted deer and otters; birds and squirrels. You can camp here too; which isn’t for us, but the campgrounds we saw were private and attractive.   

Going the tourist tour-boat route as we did takes about four hours round trip, including a fifty minute each way boat ride. The boat leaves from Pier 55 in the central water front area. We had no problem with sea sickness on the mostly calm crossing, but we did see others popping Dramamine.  The Seattle sky line is impressive, the sea air bracing, the island’s tree filled approach lovely. Once on the island, visitors head to Tillicum village, a recreated Native American community. Our kids loved the clam shell walkways and the tribal dwellings. They also enjoyed the food. Steamed clams served on arrival are tasty and sweet; visitors then enter a long house where whole salmon are prepared over a fire in a traditional Northwest Native American style. Usually tourist events like this are not particularly delicious – we’ve been the route of poi and steamed rice in Hawaii – but here the Chinook salmon is fresh and good, flavorful from cooking over a fire. After the buffet style meal comes a performance of coastal tribe dances, which were also greatly entertaining and well done. The gift shop had the usual tourist items but also included some local art work of good quality. Watching the late afternoon sun shine sparkle on the water as we returned to the city was a perfect end to a beautiful Seattle day.

Seattle Science Fiction Museum

The Experience Music project shares a conjoined building with the Seattle Science Fiction Museum. The building is shaped like a rain warped electric guitar, and that colorful exterior just starts the fun. Inside the museum is great for kids of all ages to explore, and parents will enjoy it too. For kids old enough to experience the interactive exhibits, such as the Sound Lab where you can mix a record, record yourself singing or playing an instrument – instruments available for use on site – or simply learn how to play a chord or two. The On Stage exhibit is even better – even toddlers can pretend to be rock stars, no instrument playing required. And yes, you can take home recordings of either musical experience. 

Our kids also really enjoyed the Roots and Branches exhibit, also interactive. It leads participants into the history and changes of pop and rock music over the years. A similar exhibit is Guitar Gallery, focusing on the development of guitars – larger sizing, going electric and more – it’s all very visual, very musical, and very much fun. Over in the Sci Fi part of the building, there’s everything from home world, which examines the culture and actual science behind sci fi, to an exhibit called Brave New Worlds which shows us the different ways we live, could live, and the consequences of the way we chose to live. Younger children may not appreciate the Sci Fi exhibits as much as the rock ‘n’ roll which truly does appear – on empirical, in person evidence – to appeal to the stroller crowd straight up to teens and adults. 

The younger kids will appreciate the nearby Seattle Children’s Museum. The exhibits here include Imagination Studio, a kid-centric and kid-sized art studio that employs materials such as clay, paint, and recycled stuff like cans and pencil shavings for art projects. Our kids enjoyed Cog City which is a maze of levers, pipes, balls and swings. A global village allows kids to experience different cultures; they have a nice range of atypical sites including Ghana, the Philippines, and Japan. Closer to home, the museum offers exploration of Washington State forest land with rocks, a cave, and even a lava bed. And to relax, there’s a story telling circle with books and a tree house in which to read them. 

After the Children’s museum, pick up that umbrella again and splash over from the museum to the Space Needle nearby. No visit to Seattle is satisfying without riding the elevator to the top, an exciting experience in and of itself for the kids. In spite of the rain, we had a great view from the observation deck which rises an impressive five hundred and twenty feet from the ground. We could see buildings, mountains, ocean, and the moving and shifting rain clouds. Some parts of the city were wet, some were bathed in grayish sunlight. 

When the rain stopped, the sky was bright blue at the Space Needle.

We bought some fun souvenirs in the Jetson-esque gift stores back on the ground again before taking off for the waterfront during a break in the deluging. We waded through puddles that only seemed to offset the interesting sculptures at Olympic Sculpture Park. The kids appreciated the reflected images of large pieces by Calder and Oldenburg as well as views of the sea. The park has several levels and the hands down favorite was the small man-made beach at the waters edge. 

It was raining again so I confess we didn’t take the famous hill walk or the slippery steps one climbs while taking it between the water front and Pike Place Market; we took a short cab ride. All the same, we enjoyed the market tremendously, snacking on clam chowder; french fries, and fresh fruit. 

We even purchased a giant sunflower which managed to survive for days wrapped up in wet paper towels and tin foil on our dash board -  Seattle was only a weekend place marker in a longer road trip. 

Pike Place Market is enormous with in door sprawl and stalls and buildings adjoining the main, multi-leveled market place. It’s not just produce and pastries; the kids spent over an hour at a unique music shop that featured unusual small instruments from belles to kazoos to drums to specialized guitar picks. We waited in line to get Starbucks hot chocolate at the very first store, located outside the main market. We wandered among stalls purveying arts and crafts, local salmon, crab, and shrimp, unusual spices, flowers, vegetables, home made soups, and far too tasty home made fudge.

Because it was still raining – and because this is a great way to see Seattle, our next stop was underground. We took the well known and highly praised Seattle Underground Tour. It’s a slow paced, enjoyable guided walking tour that moves beneath Seattle’s sidewalks and streets. Our kids loved the underground passage ways that once upon a time were the main roads and street level shop fronts of old Seattle. Some of the stories the guide relates are quirky and sometimes mildly raunchy, but older kids won’t mind and younger children will not notice. Stretching three blocks, the tour starts inside an 1890′s era saloon and ends in a gift shop. The tour covers most of historic Seattle’s Pioneer Square. Afterward, we strolled Pioneer Square above ground, on our own. The brick streets and tree lined plaza are a pleasant place to get some fresh air when the clouds part. And there’s great puddle jumping in the plaza. 

We ended our day nearby at the University of Washington, as we’d headquartered in a hotel in this neighborhood. I’ll share some hotel and dining options as well as some of the pleasures to be found just outside of downtown Seattle in my next blog. Keep your umbrellas ready!
