All of these concerns are very contemporary of course. Even ten years ago, families didn’t consider the cleaning products, recycling policies, or earth sustainability in hotel or resort choices. Renting hybrid vehicles instead of gas-guzzling mini-vans wasn’t really part of the vacation planning process. But now such considerations are there. Parental awareness of safety hazards for their children simply have to include cleaning chemicals and potentially toxic furnishings. And, as a parent, speaking personally, I know that the environment I leave behind will belong to my children and their children. So whenever possible, we try to support environmentally conscious hotels, when our budget and travel locations allow.

There’s a sea of green-certification policies out there, indicating just how safe and earth friendly hotels, restaurants, and destinations actually are. It can be confusing, daunting, and expensive to negotiate these policies. So we always look at basic sustainable design and with chain hotels, policy commitments to the environment.

We love staying in boutique properties like this Ojai, CA hotel - and appreciate chemical free cleaning and organic food sourcing.

Eco Friendly Kimpton Hotels

On our recent summer East Coast trip, we discovered some wonderful in-roads have been made in a variety of chains and locations. We were particularly delighted with the Kimpton Hotels properties we visited in Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., both of which utilized the kind of general green-guidelines we like our family to follow, and which will keep you and your little ones safe, healthy, and happy when traveling.  Read about our stay at the Kimpton helix in Washington D.C.

One thing we always look for that these properties made possible is a wealth of natural light. We dislike old-style chain hotels with enclosed court yards and no access to sunlight and fresh air, or very limited access through one small back window. Kimpton’s feature a direct sight-line to the outdoors through large, light-giving windows, and make a pledge that ninety percent of the spaces on their properties have this light access. Offering this really brightens a room and your child’s day; it also means that fifteen percent of lighting power has been easily reduced – and the chain stresses that it utilizes high efficiency flourescent lighting to reduce electricity waste still further. This also means less of those high-heat bulbs that can burn curious toddler fingers. Best of all, for us, Kimpton has used paint, sealants and furniture coatings that are designed to meet volatile organic compound standards – meaning no residual toxic odors in their decorating. For us, using eco-friendly non-toxic housekeeping chemicals was a key bonus as well. It’s nice to know that the hotel dresser your child is running his or her tiny hands over has not been just hosed down with a toxic chemical compound. We also liked the chain’s decision to support organic food growers and whenever possible, locally sourced food items.

Eco Friendly Sheraton Hotels

Like Kimpton, Sheraton Hotels offers recycling bins in the rooms, stresses linen and towel re-use during a stay, and has made a concerted effort to switch to Energy Star energy saving appliances in its hotels. On our recent trip to Raleigh North Carolina, we stayed at the Raleigh Sheraton in downtown which fully used green housekeeping methods and had big, bright windows letting in natural light and air.  Room service breakfast included organic, stone-ground oatmeal and local free-range eggs. Sheraton Tampa Westshore did not feature impressive natural lighting however, and we could not find that particular property’s policy on housekeeping products or food sourcing, which at least at their breakfast buffet did not have a farm-fresh feel to the offerings. You may want to check with individual properties yourself, if a hotel chain does not have complete or inclusive policy statements on its website.

Boutique Properties

Aside from chain hotels, you’ll want to contact individual hotels to find out their specific policies on the independent accommodation scene. The boutique hotel The Lennox, in Boston, featured in-room recycling and provided information on the environmentally and child friendly cleaning products used in plain sight; they were clearly working hard to live up to current green standards. The older boutique property of the Roger Smith Hotel in New York did not offer any indication as to cleaning products, energy saving, or recyling; we had to ask and found out that they are working to provide energy-reducing lighting, and do actively practice water saving techniques. There was no information about cleaning chemicals available, however.  You can read more about our stay at this hotel and our off the beaten track family visit in New York City. Many bed and breakfast options now feature information about their belief in local sourced, organic foods and organic cleaning products; older properties will not be likely to have updated wall paint or carpeting however, so bear that in mind if this is important to you.

In short: read websites, call ahead, and stay green and clean in your family travels. And when you are about to offer your child a bite of one of those shiny apples so many hotel desks offer at check-in? Consider asking if that apple is organic, and a healthy choice – if not, you might want to peel the skin before offering that tasty bite.

Wilmington is part of the Cape Fear region of the state, but there’s nothing to fear here. About twenty minutes outside of town you’ll find the pleasant, dune lined Wrightsville Beach, worthy of a day digging your toes in the smooth white sand or simply taking a walk along the waters edge.

In town, the walk to take – and a great one for the stroller set – is along the wooden boardwalk that hugs the Cape Fear River. While the view is especially lovely at twilight, do bring the insect repellant at this time of day. Pleasant waterfront cafes line the walk way in the heart of downtown, and the view of docks, water reeds, the lovely river itself is quite beautiful, and has a distinctive, Southern feel to the geography. We ate off the water, on one of several parallel streets above the river which you can tour via a horse drawn carriage ride or on foot. The half hour carriage ride presents a nice view of the local architecture and history of the town, and its capacious homes, historic churches, and shopping district.

This downtown area is filled with restaurants, coffee houses, bars, and small shops. There are a fair sprinkling of second hand and antique stores. We dined at the Bottega Art Bar where my daughter was also playing a set. A gallery setting and a fine wine selection does not make this spot unfriendly to small children, at least not early in the evening. Veggie plates, salads, hummus, and fruit make up a limited but tasty food selection; commodious chairs and sofas make this a great spot to relax and listen to live, acoustic music. Elsewhere you’ll find Tony’s Pizza, an old fashioned red checkered table cloth sort of place, with good, gooey pizza, crayons for the kids, and a pleasantly raucous atmosphere.

Battleship North Carolina

Two and a half football fields in length, children of all ages will find the Battleship North Carolina impressive. Moored in its location opposite downtown Wilmington since 1961, this ship-shape attraction is well worth exploring. Touring the ship, its easy to imagine both the daily life of a Naval crew stationed on this proud ship, and the combat the crew endured in the Pacific during World War II. Histories, photos and crew mementos fill the ship, and kids will thrill to be able to practice “steering” the massive ship, a floating city designed to house over eighteen hundred crew members. The self-guided tours are easy to follow through the lower decks, and it’s fascinating to see the contrast in conditions between enlisted men and officers. Our kids enjoyed the short film that presented the history of the ship and the rigorous efforts necessary to preserve this behemoth from becoming scrap in the ‘60′s. One caveat for parents with strollers – ladder-like stairs will mean you have to leave these behind or carry them separately from your little ones to adequately explore the ship.

Launderland – An Unusual Stop

We were also entertained by doing our laundry – we’d been traveling for awhile on the trip that took us to Wilmington, and I’d expected a laundry room at the Best Western Coastline Inn. My expectation was incorrect. The Best Western offers lovely river views from full size picture windows, and modern, clean, if on the small size, rooms. The kids particularly enjoyed the rain shower, something unusual for the motel chain experience. But – no laundry. We were directed to Launderland a few blocks away in the historic district. To our surprise we found it was a – bar. With inexpensive margaritas, a pool table, foose ball, and in the back a few scattered and somewhat ancient washers and dryers. Families were happily co-existing with bar patrons, playing video games that were also somewhat old school, and working that foose ball table. This may not be every family’s idea of a good time, but it was certainly one of the most unique laundry experiences I’ve had, and if you don’t object to the adjacent bar, and need some clean clothes, it’s a memorable stop.

Cape Fear Serpentarium

Another unusual attraction is the Cape Fear Serpentarium. If you don’t like snakes, don’t go, but if you do, or have kids who’ll be fascinated by these slithery creatures, this is a great exhibit of every kind of snake from mamba to cobra, with some lizards and parrots thrown into the mix. Informative plaques give you plenty of reptile information, and we were told that on the weekend the exhibit director offers feedings and snake story telling. We were amazed by a python that was larger in circumference than a grown man. Reptile loving kids will want to stay a long time at this off-beat attraction – unless you lure them out of town with a stop at the beach or another walk along the river front.

I had no set expectations of Raleigh on a steamy Monday, but the city proved itself not only an enjoyable tour stop with a great crowd in the downtown venue my daughter played, but a charming town with plenty to see and enjoy for all ages.

Where to stay?

While chain motels and hotels fill the surrounding Raleigh Durham area, we stayed downtown at the Sheraton Raleigh Hotel. A top floor suite gave us a luxurious two bathrooms, and plenty of room for the whole family behind one door, rather than in adjoining rooms. Modern decor and spacious layout made this hotel a winner – and with recycling in-room and the use of green cleaning products, the hotel is environmentally friendly, too. Best of all was access to a large, inviting indoor pool and free, unlimited Internet access with an ample number of computers in the business center. We had breakfast in our suite – oatmeal, fruit, eggs – that was excellent, quick, and very reasonable.

While the hotel clearly caters to a convention center crowd with plenty of business amenities, we found it welcoming for the whole family in regard to both the room configuration and the staff’s attitude. And with the sparkling clean pool open until eleven, the kids had plenty of time to enjoy the water.

Attractions We Visted

Even at twilight, when the museums and other attractions have shut down for the day, Raleigh North Carolina has some very pleasant places I recommend. The State House park is leafy and green, and surrounded by interesting historical statues. The downtown plaza lights up with modern, colorful neon; and the local news studio is right in the plaza – small children will love looking in the window and watching the newscast proceed.

Raleigh has a wonderful self guiding tour of the historic state house and capitol building on the square. The beautiful rotunda and replica of the original city library inside are unique attractions. Small children will love the winding spiral stair case. The ladies at the front desk are friendly and offer stickers to the little ones. If the legislature is in session, you can peek in if your children are old enough, and quiet enough,  to listen for a bit.

Kids of all ages will enjoy the Nascar exhibit at Raleigh's North Carolina Museum.

Behind the state house you’ll find the Museum of Natural History and the North Carolina History Museum. Both are free and Smithsonian sponsored. The exhibit quality is excellent and fascinating. In the North Carolina History Museum we were able to trace more of the history we’d been seeing in the north east – from early U.S. colonies and tobacco crops to the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. You’ll also learn about the founding of the city, and the background on Sir Walter Raleigh himself, whose statue stands in front of the convention center.

There was a Nascar exhibit which is sure to fascinate small boys and the small boy in grown men, too. A wood craft exhibit displayed beautiful local furnishings and wooden art pieces. Small children will love the farm display that includes a life-size cow ready for milking, replete with sound effects. Moving on to the Natural History building, we were fascinated by the displays of North Carolina native wild life including turtles and fish. Flora and fauna of the region were well documented, and we learned a great deal about the environment of North Carolina.

After the museums we were ready for a stroll through the Oakwood Historic District. This is a tree lined, lovely area of old homes in the style of New Orleans’ Garden District. We enjoyed walking the quiet streets lined with pastel colored, multi-story homes, and the beautiful governor’s mansion. You’ll find another fine stroll past galleries, shops, and small restaurants in the City Market Arts District on the other side of the State Capitol from Oakwood. But no matter where you walk in Raleigh, you’ll enjoy your stay and find a true respite from the road.

Our Dining Experience

Let’s start with the Remedy itself – the Remedy Diner. This funky, comfortable diner-style restaurant is actually a gourmet, vegan, vegetarian, and pescatarian paradise. Carnivores will enjoy this stop too. Children are going to love the large booths, fun art on the walls, great music on the i-pod speakers, and a wide variety of fun to eat food. Delicious vegan key lime pie and super delicious non-vegan chocolate cake for desert are made with organic ingredients that will make parents inclined to give in to their children’s sweet tooth – I certainly did. Their salads are crunchy and delicious, as are their veggie burgers and excellent chili – the main courses are prepared fresh, fast, and organic. Adults will appreciate a fine selection of wine and beer and the expert talents of the chef. Parents and kids of all ages will love this spot, where you can linger or eat a satisfying meal quickly.

If the Remedy isn’t for you, you can enjoy a hip, red and black decor and a variety of reasonably priced sushi items at Sono Raleigh, right in the revitalized downtown plaza near the convention center.

A beautiful, sunny July Saturday found us on a drive to the North Georgia Mountains and Chattahoochee National Forest, to trek up to see the Amicalola falls. The trip to the aptly named Falls (Amicalola is a Cherokee Indian name for Tumbling Waters), was rejuvenating to say the least.

2010 was a year of many memorable trips, some a few miles away, some to places across the globe and a few that transcended time, even…and I’m truly thankful for every minute of it all. Kerr Scott Reservoir Wilkesboro, NC

Wilkesboro and N.Wilkesboro are twin towns on the foothills of the Appalachians in North Carolina, about 30 miles south of Boone. The thought of this place warms my heart and energizes me because it’s where I spent the first few years of my life in the USA. It’s a lovely, scenic town with plenty of parks, creeks and nature trails and a silence about it that I just love. Every season leaves its signature touches on the town and I could spend hours just watching the trees from our windows and marvelling at how nature painted them shades of pink, green, brown and white, like clock work, year after year.

Anyway, we went back to visit friends in Mooresville, and just couldn’t return without driving to Wilkesboro. Nothing much has changed – if anything, it’s become even quieter and even more deserted, after a major home improvement moved its headquarters away from there. But, it still made us feel like we were back home. The Kerr Scott Resevoir, the Greenway trail, the scenic 421 highway were all the same, welcoming us in their silent way. Not many outsiders fell in love with Wilkesboro the way I did and not many of our friends understood what drew us to the town. Whatever it was, it’s very much real and still very powerful, for I can’t wait to go back there again.

Dad and I took an RV trip up the East Coast last summer. With no particular schedule, we had plenty of time to explore small towns as well as bigger cities. Halifax, North Carolina had never been on our radar, but when we ended up camped close by, I went online to see what was there.

History of Halifax

As it turns out, Halifax was a pretty big deal in the founding of the United States. On April 12, 1776, North Carolina’s Fourth Provincial Congress passed a unanimous resolution called the Halifax Resolves. It was the first official call for independence from England, setting the groundwork for what would become the American Revolution. Located on the banks of the Roanoke River, the city was an important center of commerce thanks to its river port and location at a crossroads of the North-South and East-West trade routes. Halifax remained prosperous until 1830, when the new railroad bypassed the city, effectively cutting it off from modern commerce.

Halifax Today

Today Halifax has a small but proud population of roughly 300. The town is quaint and charming, and fiercely dedicated to preserving its past. Nearly a dozen historic buildings are open to the public for both guided walking tours and individual exploration. Locals are friendly and welcoming, and visitors are invited to explore the town on foot.

What We Found

The abandoned slave cemetery is worth the hike

Unfortunately, Dad and I were in town on a Monday. The historic buildings are closed on Monday and Tuesday, so we were unable to get inside. However, we did pick up a self-guided walking map outside the Visitor Center. We were able to wander around and take photos through the windows while reading short blurbs about each building’s significance.

Of particular interest is an abandoned Halifax slave cemetery. The walking trail is not well-marked and requires a hike through the woods, so keep a close eye on your kids. Nature has largely reclaimed the cemetery, but a few headstones remain. Interestingly, it is not just the slave cemetery that was not kept up in decades past. In 1793, the town church was built on top of the main cemetery, completely covering numerous graves!

We also happened upon a ruined amphitheater. I have been unable to track down exactly what the purpose was or what shows might have been presented there. It’s an outdoor space with carved wooden benches overlooking a concrete stage. The remaining spotlights would seem to date the theater to around the 1960s although, of course, it’s possible that those are not the original lights. The look and style of the theater seating, with its concrete steps and metal hand rails, could easily suggest a date in the 1940s or even the late 1930s. The construction seems almost reminiscent of the Civilian Conservation Corps, which was responsible for a variety of public works projects after the Great Depression. Whatever its former purpose, the amphitheater was a truly fascinating discovery!

Halifax is also home to two memorials. One is the gravesite of the only Masonic Grand Master in the United States, Joseph Montfort. The grave is in front of the Masonic Lodge that Montfort founded. The other is a tribute to the victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. A plaque at the base of the flag pole reads “In Honor and Remembrance of the heroes and victims of September 11, 2001 and to celebrate the enduring spirit of all Americans.”

Be sure to drive out to the riverbank, where the old port once stood. Looking around at the trees and grass, it is hard to believe that this was once an industrial waterfront. Today it is a sort of oasis, hidden in the woods and protected from traffic noise. Use extra caution on the access road, though, as it is truly a bumpy ride! A private home is located next to the port site.

Was It Worth the Trip?

Halifax is never likely to be a major tourist draw, luring people to spend an entire vacation in town. However, for those who happen to find themselves nearby, Halifax is wonderfully charming. It’s a safe and friendly community full of people who are glad to tell newcomers about the past. The low number of historic buildings and compact nature of the town make it a great place to take smaller kids who might be overwhelmed by a sprawling history museum or bustling large city. Plan to spend a couple of hours exploring the historic buildings either on a guided tour or on your own, and then let your kids stretch their legs while searching for the slave cemetery or playing by the river. It’s a low-cost family outing that can easily last all day.

The 1950s were the decade of car culture, when gas was cheap and families took to the open road, many for the very first time. The interstate highway system was authorized in 1956 and construction began immediately in many states, but the first statewide segment (Nebraska’s Interstate 80) was not completed until 1974. Instead, families relied on state roads that took them on meandering journeys through big cities and small towns.       

The History of Roadside Attractions      

Beginning in the 1940s, roadside attractions sprang up around the country in an effort to lure visitors to stop. In the days before air conditioning and drive-through restaurants, the promise of a cold beverage was ample enticement, such as Wall Drug’s free ice water. Some roadside attractions featured exotic animals, quirky shopping or just really big things–such as the World’s Largest Ball of Twine. Many roadside attractions have been torn down or rotted away, while others still stand as a testament to a simpler era.

South of the Border     

If you have ever driven Interstate 95 along the East Coast, you are aware of just how endless that drive can feel. Although modern construction has ensured that you are never far from fast food and gas, try to imagine how that drive must have felt in 1949. At the time, you would have been driving US 301. There was literally nothing around, just road stretching into the wilderness as far as the eye could see.

Alan Schafer grew up in tiny Dillon County, South Carolina, across the border from a dry county in North Carolina. He had previously managed a beer distribution facility and a café for his father, and he realized that drivers on 301 could use a break. In 1949, he opened a small beer stand in Dillon County to attract both long-distance drivers and North Carolina residents in search of alcohol.

South of the Border was an instant success and, only a year later, Schafer added a 10-seat restaurant. Gift shops and motel rooms were next. Schafer traveled to Mexico in 1954 to establish connections for the Mexican theme and returned with two employees, both of whom were nicknamed Pedro. The character became the focus of advertising in a billboard campaign that stretched from Philadelphia to Daytona Beach.

Today South of the Border is more than 350 acres, encompassing a 1950s-style motel, a campground, six restaurants, a dozen shops, an amusement park, an indoor reptile exhibit, two gas stations, two 18-hole mini golf courses and a convention center. But perhaps the most fun of all is the giant sombrero. For only $1 each, you and your family can take the elevator 200 feet up to the brim for an exciting view of, well, the surrounding countryside. Still, it’s so kitschy that everyone should do it once in their lives.

Have you ever heard of the Muffler Man? Spotted in various incarnations all over the United States, these advertising icons were extraordinarily popular throughout the 1960s and 1970s. According to an article at Roadside America, all of the original Muffler Men came from a single mold owned by Prewitt Fiberglass, later International Fiberglass. The first Muffler Man was allegedly a giant Paul Bunyan developed for a café on Route 66 in Arizona. Later incarnations were Native Americans, cowboys, spacemen and even the Uniroyal girl, who appeared in both a dress and a bikini.       

We found a Paul Bunyan Muffler Man in Rocky Mount, North Carolina this summer. As the story goes, he used to be Stan the Tire Man in Salem, Illinois. He was acquired by the Log Cabin Homes sales center in Rocky Mount in 2007.       

Who knew Daniel Boone was a Shriner?

Daniel Boone, located in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, has a rather funny story attached. He used to perch atop the nearby Elmo Garner Jewelers and Home Improvement shop, but ran afoul of a sign ordinance. So his owner dedicated him to the Shriners Club where he resides today. His trademark Shriners cap is actually an overturned oil drum.       

MNO was a bizarre place, but the Uniroyal Girl looks great!

Thanks to Roadside America, we were even able to locate a Uniroyal girl back in Rocky Mount. The rather mysterious young lady clad in short shorts and a bikini top sports blonde hair and a belly button ring. But to find her, you have to make your way to an out of the way place called MNO–which allegedly stands for Men’s Night Out. The gate was open, so we took some photos. The complex is a bit bizarre, and I think the name speaks for itself. I wouldn’t recommend taking the kids at night, when the place is open! I was freaked out enough during the day!

Forgotten Cities

The United States is dotted with towns that time forgot. One example is historic Halifax, North Carolina. Hugely important in the Revolutionary War as the first colonial town to call for independence, Halifax was a thriving part of the cotton trade until the mid-1800s, when the new railroad bypassed the city. Today, only around 300 people remain. Interesting sights here include the grave of the only Masonic Grand Master in the United States, a long-abandoned slave cemetery, a September 11 memorial and a ruined old amphitheater. The city is adorable and well maintained, with a few restored buildings open to the public.    

The Truly Bizarre

Some roadside attractions are just impossible to classify. In Cordele, Georgia, we happened upon a Titan I missile, built in California but donated to the Cordele Rotary Club in 1969. The city has built up a great deal since then, and today the missile is in a gas station parking lot, towering over the Krystal restaurant across the street.   

Just as random is the Rock Garden of America, located in a front lawn along the main highway near Littleton, North Carolina. It’s literally a pile of rocks hand-labeled with the state where they were found. I think the idea is that anyone who stops by can contribute a rock, but I’m not exactly sure. Anyway, it was definitely interesting to see.     

How to Find Roadside Attractions

The examples above are just a few of the attractions we have found in our journeys. Roadside attractions are literally everywhere, dotting the landscape along America’s highways and byways. Just by keeping your eyes open as you drive along, you are bound to spot a few. If you want to do a more systematic search, however, I highly recommend visiting the Roadside America website. You can search by city and put together a personalized driving map of the attractions that interest you. It’s a great family activity, breaks up the monotony of a long drive, and costs only the price of gas. It’s also a wonderful way to introduce your kids to the history of Americana.

Biltmore Estate, spread over 8000 acres, is a national, man-made wonder nestled among the gorgeous Blue Ridge mountains in the town of Asheville, North Carolina.

As you drive through the estate’s winding, tree-lined roads you will pass lawns, gardens and water features along the way and feel warmly welcomed by the serene, natural setting that surrounds you from the minute you enter the gates. All of this, of course only serves to build up the anticipation for the real reason you’re there – the crowning jewel of the Estate – Biltmore House – a 250 room mansion that housed some of America’s wealthiest before being thrown open to the public as a tourist attraction. 

Biltmore House was George Vanderbilt’s dream country house. Known for his wealthy inheritance and his love for art, literature, music and beauty, George Vanderbilt built the house to extend his hospitality and share his love of all things tasteful and rich with guests, friends and family. His interest in the arts spilled into every aspect of the house he built with painstaking attention to detail and enjoyed sharing with family and friends including some very famous ones. Apparently he traveled around the world to bring back some of the finest, most exquisite items from various countries to furnish and decorate every corner of his magnificent house. Today, the house is managed by his family and is a popular attraction in the area and one of the most beautiful in the country. 

‘Awe-inspiring’ is the word that comes to mind when describing this immaculate house and estate, which I had the opportunity to visit twice while living in another Appalachian town in NC. 

Everything about Biltmore Estate is grand – its location amidst the breathtaking Blue Ridge peaks, its expansive lawns and gardens and other outdoor features and the many ways it offers to explore it – on horseback, bikes, scenic walks, drives and boat rides and more. George Vanderbilt’s house was and remains a symbol of luxurious decadence, but you don’t have to be royalty to experience it. A visit to Biltmore Estate and Biltmore House allows us to see and experience its history, the extravagance, the indulgence and the artistic taste that makes Biltmore Estate not just the country’s largest home, but also an American symbol in its own right.

how do you visualize 250 rooms?

 Your tour of the house begins as you walk through its grand entrance into a large, open space that leads to a winter garden featuring a glass roof over a fountain and sculpture. A banquet hall, a breakfast room where original Vanderbilt family china and crystal ware are set out on the massive breakfast table, a gallery of tapestries, a library with over 20,000 books, a salon, dressing rooms, lavishly decorated bedrooms, a grand spiral staircase underneath a mammoth-sized iron chandelier, numerous bathrooms, guest rooms, kitchens, pantries and laundry rooms are just some of the stops you’ll make as you take the grand tour. 

The handiwork of some of the world’s greatest and most renowned artists adorn these rooms in addition to larger-than-life portraits and paintings of members of the Vanderbilt family. Refer to the guide book that you receive when you purchase tickets to help you through the self-guided tour. You could also take an audio tour or a specialty guided tour for an extra charge, which give you additional details about every room and some not-so-commonly known facts. 

Spend as much time as you like taking in every indulgent detail of the house and visualizing the scenes, conversations and people that filled them just over a hundred years ago. Keep your eyes open for rare and interesting artifacts like a chess set that belonged to Napoleon Bonaparte and old-fashioned equipment such as a rolling rack in the Drying Room and the dumbwaiter in the kitchen. 

Walking through Biltmore House is like walking back in time..somewhat like exploring a museum, except that you’re constantly aware that people – men, women, families and children – actually lived and breathed in the very spaces and rooms you now walk through, using the items on display in the very same settings. It’s hard to describe the immense size and grandeur of the house in words…how do you visualize 250 rooms?
Although a tour of Biltmore House in itself is likely to take at least 2 hours and is likely to blow you away, remember, you still have the rest of the Estate to see. The house occupies a relatively small area of this 8000 acre attraction, if you can believe it. 

As you step out of the house, you will have plenty of photo ops in front of it where a huge lawn lined with flowers leads up to the entrance. Challenge yourself to capture the entire house in one frame and have fun finding the best spot to do it! 

A tour of the house is sure to leave you ravenous, so treat yourself to a hearty bite at the Stable Cafe next door or at Deerpark Restaurant before you set off to explore the rest of the attraction. The gardens of Biltmore Estate have been ranked among the world’s top Botanical Gardens by Travel and Leisure. And you will wholeheartedly agree when you experience the immaculate landscaping and serenity in these lovely gardens for yourself. 

A trip to Biltmore Estate is not complete until you have experienced the fantastic outdoor activities and adventures it offers. Allocate at least a couple of hours to visit charming Antler Hill Village where you can simply relax and unwind or enjoy an afternoon of activity – whichever suits your group best – or enjoy a little of both. A trip to Biltmore Estate offers something very rare – an opportunity to experience history, appreciate art, architecture and nature and to explore the beautiful outdoor settings of the Appalachian mountains – all in the same location in a scenic North Carolina town. World renowned tourist attractions such as the Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls, Hawaiian beaches, historic Boston, romantic Rome and others become household names thanks to TV documentaries, movies, books and magazine cover stories devoted to each and every aspect  associated with them. That doesn’t mean that places less written or talked about are any less impressive however. The truth is –no matter where we live, we are surrounded by beautiful, historic, awe-inspiring places sure to capture our hearts and kindle inspiration. But if they haven’t caught the national or world media’s attention yet because of their geography or lack of promotion, we are likely to miss experiencing them unless we keep our eyes and minds open.  Taking some time to explore our surroundings often reveals surprising discoveries and wonderful secrets that we may never read about in travel magazines or see on TV.

Nestled in the Appalachian mountains of North Carolina is one such natural attraction few outside the state may have heard about.  Grandfather Mountain, described as ‘the most rugged mountain in east America’ is a fantastic family destination where one can easily spend anywhere from 2 hours to an entire day and always leave with a desire to return again soon.  The United Nations recognizes Grandfather Mountain as one the world’s Biosphere Reserves. At almost 6000 feet above sea level, this is the highest peak in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Although the mountain is over 65 million years old, its name has as much to do with its northern profile as its age. At a certain angle, the mountain appears to resemble an old man looking towards the sky.  Squinting to spot that resemblance is part of the experience of visiting Grandfather Mountain.

That’s not all, of course.

Having lived in the area for several years, we must have paid the old man at least half a dozen visits.  And if there’s one thing I can say with confidence, it’s that we barely scratched the surface of this humbling mountain.

First things, first.  If you enjoy winding mountain roads, then the journey to Grandfather Mountain itself is sure to be a treat. Blue Ridge Parkway and Highways 321 and 221 are a dream come true for passionate drivers who love to tackle sharp bends and blind curves. ..needless to say the drive is a visual treat for any nature lover throughout the year. Fall is probably the best time to drive up there – it’s not easy to describe in words an entire mountain drenched in the colors of the rainbow, sprinkled with golden sunlight against the backdrop of a beautiful blue sky. However, every season has its own way of dressing up the valleys and ranges and do take your time to stop at least at a couple of overlooks and inhale the beauty before you proceed to Grandfather Mountain.

Things to do in Grandfather Mountain

Once you get in, you’ll pass through a native wildlife habitat on your way to the top. You should definitely stop here and spend at least 30-40 minutes watching the cougar, bald eagles, deer, otters and other animal friends in their habitats. If you’re lucky you might even get a peek at the bear family. This is a great place for young kids to get the feel of a forest and see how animals lived hundreds of years ago.

As you climb up, there are a few more overlooks and picnic areas that welcome you. But the real thrill begins once you’re at the top – near the visitor’s center. This is where you get to enjoy a cup of hot chocolate and prepare yourself for the exhilarating walk across the mile high swing bridge. That’s right. It’s one mile high. And it’s a swinging bridge – the highest of its kind in America! The highlight of Grandfather Mountain for most visitors is a walk across this bridge to the rocky edge of the mountain that is not fenced in.  It’s a truly liberating experience to walk among the clouds and mist, with views of a lake, the mountains and the Appalachian forests below. For many, those few moments when you’re walking over the bridge will most likely bring you closer to nature than you ever thought possible. We like to spend hours sitting on those rocks with nothing between us and the mountains, just staring out into infinity.

If you’d like a little more action than that though, be sure to check out the trail maps and pick a hiking trail that fits your schedule and fitness level. There are a few challenging ones that may not be suitable for kids and one or two that are more child-friendly.  I know for sure that the Grandfather Trail is the most difficult. It starts at the visitor center and you get to scale the mountain’s tallest peaks before reaching the very top.  A great hike if you’re up for 4 hours of very serious climbing. The Woods Walk Bridge Trail is a short, easy trail that takes you from the lower part of the mountain to the Swinging Bridge.

Besides the Swinging Bridge, the hikes and the habitat, there’s also a Nature Museum where you can watch nature films about the mountain. There’s also a restaurant and a gift shop worth checking out if you have the time.

Grandfather Mountain is not for you if you like a fully-packed schedule with ‘What’s next?’ constantly on your mind. There are no thrill rides or fast track entertainment options here.  Grandfather Mountain is about slow-paced self- discovery, the soulful sounds of silence, expanding natural beauty and an enriching, wholesome day spent with your family challenging and advancing your knowledge of nature.  Venture here only if you can handle true joy – the kind that comes from realizing the power of nature and not from a thundering roller coaster.
