Cumberland Island National Seashore – Georgia

Gnarled live oaks hanging with Spanish moss, unspoiled beaches, and a diverse population of birds, plants and animals including wild horses live at Cumberland Island National Seashore. At 17 miles long by 3 miles at its widest point, this Atlantic barrier island is found off the coast of Georgia.  Nature lovers will delight in its white sand beach, dunes, tidal mudflats, creeks, marshes and sun-speckled woods. It was once owned by the Carnegie family whose mansions still stand on part of the island, as do moss-clung ruins that only enhance the wild romance of this place. It can be reached by ferry from St. Mary’s, Georgia.

Congaree National Park – South Carolina

The old-growth trees at Congaree National Park in South Carolina steal the show here. Second only to California’s giant sequoias in height, the trees are the tallest around. This protected wilderness is home to river otters, heron, flying squirrels, box turtles, wild boar and close to 200 species of birds. Walking through the magnificent old-growth oaks, beeches, sycamores and bald cypresses is like stepping back into prehistoric times. Part of the hiking trails are on elevated boardwalks due to the natural flooding of the area several times a year. With its meandering creeks, swampy floodplains and sunlight drifting through the soaring arched canopy above, one can almost imagine dinosaurs inhabiting the area.

Fall Creek Falls State Park is a scenic wonderland with dramatic natural formations including secluded trails through oak, hickory and mountain laurel trees, caves systems, swing bridges over gorges, limestone sinkholes, and streams met by cascades and waterfalls. There is backcountry camping (by permit) as well as an inn with restaurant, and cabin rentals. This state park has a wild and rugged beauty that is a haven for hikers.

There are many places named after the first president of the United States, and George Washington National Forest is one of them. Its accessibility to city folks draws people who love the majesty of the great outdoors. Stretching along the Appalachians with deep valleys, wooded ridges, and rivers, this is a wonderful place for fishing, horseback riding, hunting, canoeing and camping. Historic Mary Washington House was just one historic stop in Fredericksburg that we enjoyed exploring.

Looking for a friendly town full of history? On a recent east coast visit, charming Fredericksburg Virginia more than fit the bill for history buffs, scenery lovers, and shopping enthusiasts. It made a great stop as we drove from the Washington D.C. area into the south. Just off busy Interstate 95, the town retains a small town, historic feel, and is centrally located in an area filled with historic attractions. The town would also make a great pairing with a trip to the much more tourist driven mecca of Williamsburg Virginia. As a single night and day stop, it also serves well. Our kids loved the quaint streets and unique gift shops; and learning about the history of the region was easy and fun, with so much centered in the immediate downtown area. And we had one fascinating part of our history handed to us with our choice of accommodations.

The reasonably priced Richard Johnson Inn was built in 1754 by one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, architect John Taylow. The property is in the middle of the historic downtown area, allowing us to walk easily to Mary Washington’s house and the Fredericksburg museum. The rooms are large and pleasant, and an outdoor patio with a pretty fountain offers a nice gathering place for star gazing on a clear night. We liked the added bonus of a full breakfast served on weekends. While the Inn gladly accommodates children, families should let the inn know you’re coming with tots in tow. Some rooms are more appropriate than others. For families with children over twelve, no need to alert the staff.

Our first stop in the historic downtown core though was the Rising Sun Tavern, built by George Washington’s brother. Here, just a short walk from the inn, costumed guides wowed the kids by explaining the fascinatingly grotesque medical procedures of the time period from leeches to blister beetles and putting a hot cup over an open wound to draw out “poison” and blood. While the Tavern is no longer serving, we also learned where the word bartender originated: apparently servers used to keep their best bottles in cages.

Just outside of town, you’ll find Ferry Farm, George Washington’s boyhood home, and the location of the apocryphal cherry tree story. While most of the plantation is long gone, you can still see the cellar and the property itself. A little farther down the road there’s a national memorial to Washington’s birth place, where only the foundation remains. Still, the pastoral setting is lovely. The Farm has an interesting visitor center where you can start a self-guided tour of the property. We loved the rolling green countryside and the sense that we were literally walking in the footsteps of our country’s first president.

When the sun goes down in Fredericksburg, the ghost tours come out to lead families through the town's haunted history.

Back in Fredericksburg, we enjoyed a short but restful sunset carriage tour of the historic streets, and our kids were allowed to feed the horse an apple treat. While the sounds of hooves clip clopping down the streets were soothing, and local landmarks were pointed out, that was too tame a look at the town for our children. As we do in many cities, we found ourselves opting for a ghost tour. While there are several to chose from, we took the “Ghosts of Fredericksburg” tour that leaves directly from the visitors center. We learned that Fredericksburg held over a hundred thousand casualties from the Colonial to the Civil War period, making the streets ripe for haunting. The tour featured costumed guides leading us on an approximately ninety minute walking tour through the downtown area, telling us ghoulish tales and historical facts. The ghostly stories were mild enough for all ages; families with strollers welcomed.

Daylight brought us to the James Monroe museum, a collection of personal possessions belonging to Fredericksburg’s own James Monroe, the fifth U.S. president. While the kids enjoyed the garden the most, this is a must for older children and history buffs of all ages.

Another pleasant garden and more history awaits at the Mary Washington house, purchased in town for her by her son George.

We took a break from the history to let the kids explore the lovely Duff McDuff Park which overlooks the Rappahannock River. Running the grassy expanse with a great view of the rolling river worked up an appetite, which we sated by a stop at the charming sidewalk cafe Bistro Bethem. Named for its chef, the organic fruits and veggies served up were delicious, and we found this spot both family friendly and willing to accommodate the varied diets in our family.

Our favorite menu item was desert – a berry cobbler with local fruit sweet enough to please the kids and elegant enough for more sophisticated palates.

We enjoyed the easy going history that fills the town, the costumed guides, and the stories they told. Although outside food/beverages and coolers are not permitted (with the exception of unopened bottled water and baby items), there is a variety of food and snacks available throughout the park including tasty hamburgers, chicken sandwiches, hot dogs, pizza, ice cream, sweet treats and more.

Over 100 lifeguards and attendants are stationed throughout the park, and life jackets are available free of charge. Inner tubes on rides that require them are also provided free of charge. Lockers can be rented to store valuables. Paid parking is plentiful.

Open late May through early September, Wet ‘n Wild Emerald Pointe is another magnificent choice of water parks for families earning it’s place as one of the top 10 best American waterparks.

Williamsburg was a wonderful way to experience history for kids of all ages!

We weren’t quite sure what to expect from Williamsburg, a classic attraction that I’d visited both as a small child and a mid-teen. In recent years attendance has dropped and some parents have told me that the attraction felt a little dated. But no worries: the trip was well worth undertaking. From reenacted historical scenes to the scent of fresh baked pies wafting from “colonial” bakeries, our trip was enriching and fun.

Colonial Williamsburg is a wonderful family attraction, and along with the history you’ll consume, you’ll also get to enjoy pleasant walks that allow you to experience the town. We’d heard in the past that Williamsburg is best for upper elementary aged children; that teens and tots can be bored by the experience, but we did not find either to be the case. The buildings and crafts people offer plenty of good visual enjoyment, and the staff that portrays pre-Revolutionary war characters make the entire town not only feel alive but transport visitors to a different era. My kids felt as if they were in a “time machine,” and this experience is truly created by the actors and actresses who roam through the town and recreate conversations and key events of the period. There is an organic feel to the re-enactments; they are not performed on a stage.

We were a mix of teen and toddler and everyone had a good time. The teens learned more about history than they had in high school classes, and painlessly. The tots loved the colors, sights, sounds, gardens, farm animals, costumes and pageantry. No matter what your children’s ages, they’ll have a good time.

For us, staying right in town was best of all – most of the tourist crowd leaves after dark, and there are carriage rides and walking tours that feel almost private by comparison. Our favorite moments were at twilight, strolling through the bright and cheerful gardens in the last waning light. We felt an almost “Brigadoon” like moment then – you know the story of a town that sleeps for hundreds of years and is frozen in time. A moonlit carriage ride was a real highlight, offering us a relaxing view of the town and its architecture.

Back to the past – Williamsburg, VA

All of the character actors participating in the re-creation of the era were uniformly friendly and answered questions that they had probably heard a hundred times before without flinching. This was a special delight, having encountered cranky Disney characters in the past. We heard George Washington plan a campaign and watched him attend a Salem Witch Trial. We watched a blacksmith create horseshoes, saw candles being made, barrels staved, bread being baked, and butter churned. Yes there were crowds, but the experience was still wonderful. The kids learned about kneading dough, melting wax into molds, heating and shaping hot metal. They didn’t just hear about these activities, they saw them. Seeing how people actually lived in this time period was like participating in this era. The kids were excited to share in the experience.

After watching, listening, absorbing the life of the town, it was time to take a break. Both days spent in town, we took our break in the formal gardens. The best part: the maze. Plenty of space to run around and let off a little pre-revolutionary steam for the tots, and a nice time to relax for the older kids and adults. The bakery near by offers fresh hot rolls and muffins for a nice pick-me- up snack. The gardens themselves hold plants that were grown in colonial times. Trees line the paths.

Our combined admission to Williamsburg with Busch Gardens gave us a day away from colonial times and very much in the present. But unlike many amusement parks, the Gardens have plenty of shade, actual gardens, and a relaxed feel which makes it a better companion attraction than we’d thought.

Small children will like Sesame Place the best, with it’s kid-sized rides similar to those the big kids can enjoy. Dragon Land also has rides that will appeal to all ages. For older kids and adults, The Griffin Roller Coaster is a top pick.

We spent most of our time in Williamsburg. While just strolling through town and joining in when we found a re-enactment or crafts person at work was perfect for us, there is an i-Phone application available that includes an interactive children’s game allowing kids to find clues in town that lead them to different attractions.

As to our overnight accommodations, we would’ve loved to stay in a colonial home, but no one invited us in. So, we had to make do with the Williamsburg Lodge, a reasonably priced and pleasant location in town, which was convenient as well as clean and comfortable. The rooms were good sized and our room, like many, had a fire place. Dining options are somewhat limited but the lodge offers a somewhat standard breakfast buffet. For dinner we chose Chowning’s Tavern, where the Colonial atmosphere makes for a special meal. Favorite dish: welsh rarebit. The cheesy warmth kept us going for an evening carriage ride through the moonlight streets of another era.

Visit the soldiers' encampment at Yorktown Victory Center

Although we generally think of 1776 as the year of American Independence, the Revolutionary War actually raged for another five years. In spring 1781, British forces under Lord Cornwallis took up a defensive and well-fortified position in Yorktown. That fall, under cover of darkness, an alliance of French and American troops was able to overwhelm Cornwallis’ army. The unlikely victory at Yorktown effectively ended the war. The Articles of Capitulation were signed on October 19, 1781 and a public surrender ceremony was performed. The Treaty of Paris in 1783 made the end of the war official.

The Yorktown Victory Center is part of the Historic Triangle attractions, which also include the Jamestown Settlement and Colonial Williamsburg. Various ticket packages are available, some of which are only sold on the official website. Visitors are welcome to use the complimentary Historic Triangle shuttle bus system.

The Victory Center features an elaborate and very well-done museum that uses historical artifacts to explain the circumstances of the Battle of Yorktown and the Revolutionary War in general. Adults and children with an interest in history will want to spend several hours in the museum. The displays are eye-catching and appropriate for smaller children as well, although they may not have the attention span to spend a great deal of time inside.

Outside, a living history area depicts a typical Revolutionary War soldiers’ encampment. Costumed interpreters are on hand to explain the roles of various members of the camp. Of particular interest is the hospital tent, in which your family can learn about the various remedies used for common illnesses and injuries. A small farm is also located nearby, where costumed interpreters explain the daily life of Americans in the 1780s.

Yorktown Battlefield

Take a driving tour of the earthworks

Operated by the National Park Service, the Yorktown Battlefield is the actual location where the historic battle occurred. There is a small admission fee for adults, while children under age 16 are admitted free. Admission is included in some Historic Triangle ticket packages, and holders of certain National Park Passes are admitted free.

There are two driving tours at the Battlefield

Plan to spend most of a day at the battlefield. If you have a car, two separate audio tours give you the opportunity to explore the park at your own pace. The first tour visits the original and reconstructed earthworks, including Redoubts 9 and 10, taken by the American and French armies on the night of October 14, 1781. The second tour visits the various encampments, including Washington’s Headquarters. Both tours invite you to pause the narration at various points and get out of the car to explore.

Enjoy a ranger-guided walk along the Siege Line

A variety of ranger-guided walking tours depart from the visitor center throughout the day. Tours include a walk along the Siege Line, artillery demonstrations, and even a guided walk through the modern city of Yorktown. A Young Soldiers program allows kids to interact with a costumed interpreter to learn about the daily life of Revolutionary soldiers. Note that not all programs are offered during the winter.

Downtown Yorktown

Downtown Yorktown offers modern shopping, dining and recreation

Yorktown’s downtown waterfront district is a small but thriving complex of shops and restaurants. Enjoy a renowned Hot Brown sandwich at the elegant Riverfront Restaurant or grab an ice cream cone from a local vendor. Take a daytime or sunset cruise on the Schooner Alliance, rent a Segway or simply stroll the mile-long boardwalk.

Whatever you decide to do, the waterfront district is a great place to get away from historic sightseeing and simply burn off some steam. A variety of concerts, festivals, fireworks shows and other special events take place throughout the year, drawing locals and tourists alike.

Tips for Parents

Costumed interpreters are always happy to answer kids' (and adults!) questions

Yorktown is an excellent spot for hands-on history. Kids are invited to ask questions and participate in activities at both the Victory Center and the Yorktown Battlefield. A mix of self-guided and ranger-led activities allows parents to tailor the day to their kids’ interests and attention spans. A stop by the waterfront allows the whole family to simply relax and recharge.

Note that the weather in Yorktown is often brutally hot during the summer and quite cold in the winter. Dress appropriately for the season, and monitor weather forecasts. Most activities take place outdoors, making Yorktown a great choice for a mild, sunny day. Note that the earthworks at the battlefield are relatively fragile. Keep your kids on the marked paths and do not allow them to climb or play on the earthen walls.

Avoid climbing or playing on the fragile earthworks

Also note that some of the terrain is uneven, so make sure everyone is wearing sturdy shoes rather than sandals or flip flops. Although the battlefield is heavily monitored by the National Park Service, there are some areas of natural growth. Respect warning signs regarding snakes and other natural hazards.

All of Yorktown’s tourist spots are accessible via the free Historic Triangle shuttle bus from Colonial Williamsburg or Jamestown. The shuttle is reasonably convenient, but if you have a car you may prefer the flexibility of driving. The roads are well marked and there is plenty of free parking at each location.

Everyone knows the story of the Pilgrims arriving at Plymouth Rock. What is not as well known, however, is the story of Jamestowne (as it was spelled in the 1600s). A group of 104 travelers from England, financed by the Virginia Company of London, landed on the Virginia shore in 1607. The settlement managed to survive intense hardships in the early years, making it the first permanent English colony in what would become the United States.

In those earliest days, who would have guessed that less than 170 years later another town just around the corner would become the seat of the American Revolution? Today Jamestown is considered part of the Historic Triangle alongside Colonial Williamsburg and Yorktown. If you are visiting the Williamsburg area, Jamestown is an easy day trip. You can even take the free Historic Triangle shuttle bus.

Jamestown Settlement

Kids can play freely at the Jamestown Settlement

The Jamestown Settlement is not actually the site of the original colony. Instead, it is a recreation of the fort, the ships that carried the original settlers, and a Powhatan Indian village. The Powhatan tribe was instrumental in helping the settlers acclimatize to their new surroundings, as well as an important source of trading. Costumed interpreters are on hand throughout the day, and since the “artifacts” are actually reproductions, kids are permitted to run and play freely throughout the buildings.

The museum at Jamestown Settlement is a must-see for older kids and adults

There is also a fairly extensive museum on site that chronicles the history of the area. Small children may not get much out of the museum displays, but older kids and adults will not want to miss this. Perhaps the adults in your group could trade off visiting the museum and the settlement?

Historic Jamestowne

Historic Jamestowne is the site of the original settlement. The site is jointly managed by the National Park Service and the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities. There is a small fee for adult admission, while those aged 15 and under are admitted free. Admission is included in a variety of Historic Triangle tickets. Additionally, those who hold National Park Service passes or certain other types of passes may be admitted free. Visit the Historic Jamestowne website for details.

The Archaearium is great fun for all ages

The site has several points of interest including the Jamestown Memorial Church and the elaborate Voorhees Archaearium. The Archaearium is a fascinating collection of memorabilia unearthed from the original James Fort site. It also serves as a working research center, so there is no telling what sort of project may be underway during your visit. Both children and adults seem mesmerized by the displays, which do an excellent job of explaining things in a captivating way.

Tips for Parents

Learn the story of the Powhatan tribe including Pocahantas and John Smith

Jamestown can be surprisingly hot during the summer and cold during the winter. Rain is not uncommon, particularly during the summer months. Watch the weather forecasts and try to choose a day to visit when the weather is relatively mild. Most of the exhibits at both the settlement and the historic site are outdoors on uneven ground, so choose comfortable walking shoes and clothes that can get dirty. Although strollers are permitted in both locations, they can be unwieldy, so take one only if absolutely necessary.

There are cafeterias at both locations, but depending on where you are when you get hungry, it can be a fairly long walk to the café. Carry snacks and bottled water with you, but note that both must be entirely put away in a bag or purse when visiting the museum or outdoor living history areas at Jamestown Settlement. There are sidewalks and benches along the perimeter where you can move to have a snack.

The Historic Triangle shuttle runs throughout the day between the Colonial Williamsburg Visitor Center and Jamestown with stops at both the Jamestown Settlement and Historic Jamestowne. Shuttle service may be limited or unavailable during the winter months. The shuttle is free and convenient, but those with very small children may prefer to take your own car. The drive is short and easy, parking is free, and having a car gives you total flexibility in your schedule.

We wanted a Colonial Christmas with all the trimmings

Our first Christmas trip out of town felt a bit like we were running away from home. I was a married adult with no children, and my husband and I traveled with my parents. We left our hometown in Central Florida for Williamsburg, Virginia to experience a Colonial Christmas. 

Our Traditions 

Would we miss the family's Christmas dinner?

Leaving home meant leaving behind every holiday tradition we had ever known. My extended family is enormous, and at the time virtually all of the relatives lived within an hour’s drive. We rotated hosting duties between several families, and at least 30 people were in attendance at each Christmas dinner. Leaving town meant that we would be entirely on our own for Christmas, away from the camaraderie (and food!) to which we were accustomed. 

We loved decorating and enjoying our home at Christmas

My immediate family had a few traditions of our own as well. One entire day was always dedicated to the hunt for the perfect Christmas tree. Only the fattest, straightest, most perfect live tree would do, and we searched every lot in the surrounding area. Decorating the tree was another all-day affair. We loved to pull off huge surprises with Christmas gifts, and would often go to the mall together and then break off singly or in pairs to do our secret shopping. Once we all ended up in Sears at the same time, and each person dove behind a different clothing rack to avoid revealing what gifts we had in hand! Christmas Eve night was special as well. We saved the presents for those who did not live with us until that night, and all sat around under the tree eating Christmas cookies and drinking flavored coffee, wrapping those gifts together. 

Battling Uncertainty 

Colonial Williamsburg puts on tons of special holiday performances

We really wanted to experience a Colonial Christmas, but we were a bit afraid of losing our traditions altogether. What would we do about a tree? Where would we eat Christmas dinner? How could we combat the inevitable loneliness? 

We decided that preparation was the best defense. Our preferred lodging in Williamsburg was usually the Governors Inn, a budget property that is part of the official Colonial Williamsburg hotel collection. However, on this trip we opted for an all-suite hotel down the road instead. We wanted plenty of space to spread out and decorate, rather than feeling cramped in a single room. 

We purchased tickets to several Colonial Williamsburg programs well in advance. Tickets go on sale in September, and some events sell out very quickly. We wanted to ensure that we had somewhere to go each day, rather than wandering around aimlessly. 

Holiday Traditions Re-imagined 

Special holiday meals are definitely worth the money

A live Christmas tree was at the top of our list, so we went looking for one as soon as we got to town. We ended up with the biggest tree our room could handle–a 6-footer with an excellent girth. My husband and father dutifully dragged that tree up the stairs to our suite. We brought some of our best Christmas ornaments from home, and made a Wal-Mart run for inexpensive ornaments to fill in the gaps. Decorating took less than half a day, but we made time for it in the schedule rather than leaving it to chance. The housekeeping staff was simultaneously amused and impressed by our tree! 

We opted for a special dinner out on Christmas Eve, rather than staying in the room. The Yuletide Supper was an elegant meal highlighted by musical performances, but our biggest surprise was the collection of dishes. All foods served were popular during the Colonial period, but barely recognizable as a holiday meal today. 

We bought interesting but small Colonial gifts for each other

We had a long-standing tradition of rotating “big Christmas” years. The person whose turn it was would receive a bigger or more expensive present than usual. Before the trip, we decided that the trip itself served as a “big Christmas” for all of us. Instead of spending a lot of money on gifts, we set a dollar limit and made a game out of seeing how many Colonial gifts we could buy each person for that amount of money. We still got to sneak around and search for surprises, but they were small things like a wooden whistle or a book about the area, rather than high-priced things from the mall. 

What We Missed 

We couldn't find space anywhere for dinner on Christmas Day!

The entire trip went exceptionally smoothly, with one glaring exception. We booked things to do every day except Christmas Day. We wanted the schedule to be loose that day, allowing us to take things in at our leisure. That would have been perfect, except that we didn’t count on the sheer number of tourists. We were unable to find space at any of the taverns or nearby restaurants for Christmas dinner! We ended up eating wings and salads at the hotel sports bar! It was kind of fun, though, and certainly didn’t ruin our holiday. 

What We Learned 

We had so much fun that we turned traveling into its own Christmas tradition!

We discovered that we really enjoyed traveling over the holidays. We called the family on Christmas afternoon, and our relatives got a kick out of passing the phone around so everyone could speak with us. We were able to maintain our holiday traditions, albeit in a different format. The trip went so well that we did it again and again, traveling to a different place each time. 

Now we travel full time in an RV

My mom is gone now, and I am divorced. My father and I live together in an RV, and RV traveling is our way of life. The extended family is scattered over several states, and getting together for the holidays is a rare experience. Dad and I are constantly reinventing our holiday traditions, getting together with others at whatever RV park or hostel we happen to be at. We have learned that a small artificial tree fits well on the table outside the RV, and we have learned that online stores deliver packages as General Delivery to post offices nearby. The RV kitchen or hotel kitchenette allows us to prepare certain favorite dishes, and we enjoy trying out the local cuisine in various places. But most of all, we have learned to book dinner on Christmas Day well in advance!
