Mill Mountain Zoo - Roanoke, The Mill Mountain Zoo is a zoo located atop Mill Mountain in Roanoke, Virginia. Originally opening in 1952, the zoo was operated by the City of Roanoke for its first 24 years. In 1976, the city turned its operation over to the Roanoke Jaycees. The Jaycees would subsequently operate the zoo through 1988 when its operation was placed into the hands of the non-profit Blue Ridge Zoological Society. The BRZS today still serves as the operator and fund-raising mechanism for the zoo and its operations.

Roanoke Civic Center - Roanoke, Roanoke Civic Center is a 9,828-seat multi-purpose arena that is situated in the Williamson Road neighborhood of Roanoke, Virginia. It was built in 1971. It was the former home to the Roanoke Dazzle basketball team, as well as the Roanoke Express and Roanoke Valley Vipers ice hockey teams. Currently, it is the home of the Virginia Tech men's ice hockey team. The Arena is also the home of the annual boys basketball games between Roanoke's two city schools, Patrick Henry High School and William Fleming High School.

Salem Civic Center - Salem, The Salem Civic Center is a 6,820-seat multi-purpose arena in Salem, Virginia. It was built in 1967 and is part of the James E. Taliaferro Sports and Entertainment Complex, which also includes the Salem Football Stadium and the Salem Memorial Baseball Stadium. The Salem Civic Center was originally known as the Salem-Roanoke County Civic Center, but the county withdrew its financial backing in the 1980s.

The Blue Ridge Parkway traverses several states and can take days to explore, our family road trip was a loop in Virginia from Roanoke to Abingdon and back again.

We left New Jersey where all three of our sons were born and raised heading West. Our road trip was through Newark Delaware, West Virginia, Natural Bridge, Baltimore - our goal was to reach Roanoke.
