Anne Spencer House - Lynchburg, The Anne Spencer House, in Lynchburg, Virginia in the US was, from 1903 to 1975, the home of Anne Spencer, a poet of the Harlem Renaissance. She was the first Virginian and first African-American to have her poetry included in the Norton Anthology of American Poetry. Not only was Spencer a successful poet, she was also a committed activist for equal rights, and her house also served as a political center of the community.

Booker T. Washington National Monument - , Franklin County, The Booker T. Washington National Monument is a National Monument near Hardy, Franklin County, Virginia. It preserves portions of the 207-acre tobacco farm on which educator and leader Booker T. Washington was born into slavery on April 5, 1856. It provides interpretation of Washington's life and achievements, as well as interpretation of 1850s slavery and farming through the use of buildings, gardens, crafts and animals.

Lee Chapel - Lexington, Lee Chapel is a National Historic Landmark in Lexington, Virginia, on the campus of Washington and Lee University. It was constructed during 1867-68 at the request of Robert E. Lee, who was President of the University at the time, and after whom the building is named. The Victorian brick architectural design was probably the work of his son, George Washington Custis Lee, with details contributed by Col. Thomas Williamson, an architect and professor of engineering at the neighboring Virginia Military Institute.

Mill Mountain Zoo - Roanoke, The Mill Mountain Zoo is a zoo located atop Mill Mountain in Roanoke, Virginia. Originally opening in 1952, the zoo was operated by the City of Roanoke for its first 24 years. In 1976, the city turned its operation over to the Roanoke Jaycees. The Jaycees would subsequently operate the zoo through 1988 when its operation was placed into the hands of the non-profit Blue Ridge Zoological Society. The BRZS today still serves as the operator and fund-raising mechanism for the zoo and its operations.

O. Winston Link Museum - Roanoke, The O. Winston Link Museum is a museum dedicated to the photography of O. Winston Link, the twentieth century railroad photographer widely considered the master of the juxtaposition between steam railroading and rural culture.

Point of Honor - Lynchburg, Point of Honor is a historic home located at Lynchburg, Virginia. It is an irregular shaped two-story Federal mansion of stuccoed brick. The facade is composed of a three-bay center section flanked by two octagonal ended projections. Construction was started in 1806, and completed in 1815. The property has commanding views of the city and the James River. Its most famous occupant was Dr. George Cabell, who was a friend of Thomas Jefferson, and physician to Patrick Henry.

We left New Jersey where all three of our sons were born and raised heading West. Our road trip was through Newark Delaware, West Virginia, Natural Bridge, Baltimore - our goal was to reach Roanoke.
