The seasonal climate varies in Big Island with daytime temperatures averaging 83 degrees in the summer, and 47 degrees in the winter months. Visitors can also expect Big Island to receive an average of 3.26 inches of rainfall per/month during winter months and 4 inches of rainfall per/month in the summer months. Anne Spencer House - Lynchburg, The Anne Spencer House, in Lynchburg, Virginia in the US was, from 1903 to 1975, the home of Anne Spencer, a poet of the Harlem Renaissance. She was the first Virginian and first African-American to have her poetry included in the Norton Anthology of American Poetry. Not only was Spencer a successful poet, she was also a committed activist for equal rights, and her house also served as a political center of the community.

Avoca Museum - Altavista, Altavista is an incorporated town in Campbell County, Virginia. The population was 3,425 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Lynchburg Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Booker T. Washington National Monument - , Franklin County, The Booker T. Washington National Monument is a National Monument near Hardy, Franklin County, Virginia. It preserves portions of the 207-acre tobacco farm on which educator and leader Booker T. Washington was born into slavery on April 5, 1856. It provides interpretation of Washington's life and achievements, as well as interpretation of 1850s slavery and farming through the use of buildings, gardens, crafts and animals.

Cyrus McCormick Farm - Steeles Tavern, The Cyrus McCormick Farm and Workshop is on the family farm of inventor Cyrus Hall McCormick known as Walnut Grove. Cyrus Hall McCormick improved and patented the mechanical reaper, which eventually led to the creation of the combine harvester. The farm is near Steele's Tavern, Virginia and Raphine, Virginia, close to the northern border of Rockbridge County, Virginia and Augusta County, Virginia, and is currently a museum run by the Virginia Agricultural Experimental Station of Virginia Tech.

Lee Chapel - Lexington, Lee Chapel is a National Historic Landmark in Lexington, Virginia, on the campus of Washington and Lee University. It was constructed during 1867-68 at the request of Robert E. Lee, who was President of the University at the time, and after whom the building is named. The Victorian brick architectural design was probably the work of his son, George Washington Custis Lee, with details contributed by Col. Thomas Williamson, an architect and professor of engineering at the neighboring Virginia Military Institute.
