Wildlife Ranch is an amazing safari experience

Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch offers visitors a chance to do something many of them might never have the opportunity to do in their lifetimes: go on an African safari right in San Antonio, Texas!

Many of the animals walk right up to the cars, eager for a snack they have come to expect from the people driving by. They poke their noses into car windows, completely unafraid of the four-wheeled creatures that roll along the road oohing, ahhing, and pointing excitedly at them.

Among the many animals are bison, longhorn cattle, watusi cattle, elk, several deer species, zebras, wildebeests, rhinos, camels, ostriches, Sicilian donkeys, llamas, antelope, goats, emus, kangaroos, giraffes and more. This sanctuary provides refuge to many endangered animals, while helping to propagate their species through breeding programs. It is fun to watch some of them stroll up close, and makes for lots of great photo opportunities. The goats are especially eager for a treat which is given to guests with paid admittance upon entering the ranch, but it is best to buy a few extra bags of the pellets, because they are used up quickly.

This is a great opportunity to see these animals in a recreated natural habit setting. Some of them relax and lounge under the shade of one of the many trees. Others forage through the grasses, meandering in groups, while others still gather down by the watering holes for a drink or to cool themselves off with their babies in tow. One can easily imagine being in the African plains, it is that amazing. And it is a sight that is right out of one of those nature programs.

Sicilian donkeys are sweet and affectionate

•  The Sicilian donkeys are miniature donkeys, growing no more than 34 inches at the shoulders. These adorable creatures with their soft ears and trusting faces are just so sweet-natured, affectionate, and easy-going.
• The Stripe patterns of zebras are as unique to each of them as are the thumb prints on people.
• The American Bison is one of North America’s largest mammals.
• Wildebeest are one of the largest species of antelope.

  Watusi are the largest horned animals in the world

  Bactrian camels have two humps, and are closely related to llamas. Unlike popular misconception, their humps are not filled with water, but made of fat instead.

• Ostriches can run up to 45 miles per hour, and are the only two-toed birds in the world.
• Giraffes are the world’s tallest land mammals, growing up to 19 feet tall, and weighing up to 3,000 pounds.

  An emu and her babies visit a watering hole for a drink

  The white rhinoceros is the second largest land mammal after the elephant. These endangered species are reminiscent of dinosaurs from long ago, with their horns and massive leathery bodies.

• The Patagonian cavies are the world’s third largest rodent after capybaras and beavers. These sun-basking creatures are monogamous by nature, staying with the same partner for life.

In addition to the safari animals and petting barnyard, guests can walk around to observe a variety of parrots in their spacious enclosures, chickens roosting in a henhouse, and lemurs cuddling with their long tails wrapped like fuzzy scarves about each other,  or frolicking around the little “island” that is their home here.

Every zebra has its own unique pattern of stripes

One of the nicest things about this wildlife ranch is that you can drive through in the safety and comfort of your own car. But it can get busy, with cars stopped for long whiles, so it’s best to go early or go later in the day when it will be less crowded. The wildlife ranch also gives visitors a chance to experience an African-style safari right in the heart of Texas.  After going on the safari, guests can stroll in the walk-a-bout and petting barnyard areas which are nicely shaded by large trees, making it cool and comfortable for little ones and their parents.  There is a Safari Trading Post gift shop that sells fun safari-themed souvenirs, and a Safari Camp Grill for hungry humans to get a bite to eat. Both the gift shop and grill are located across from each other in the walk-a-bout area next to the petting barnyard. Everything is close to each other, including the parking, making it all very convenient. The overall experience is a wonderful educational adventure that will never be forgotten.

Columns rise to the lofty ceiling like sentinels on guard

Imagine a lost kingdom hidden deep within the ground. A place whose narrow crystal corridors open up to caverns that resemble the great halls of a castle, complete with stalactites hanging like crystal chandeliers, imposing columns that reach to the lofty ceilings, and stalagmites rising like sentinels guarding a land of secrets.  This is a sumptuous rocky palace whose shimmering walls are draped in flowing crystal formations from the calcite minerals of which they are formed.  It is a captivating citadel where fables, fiction and fantasy are brought to life in a timeless realm of stunning splendor.

It is not hard to imagine these things when visiting Natural Bridge Caverns in San Antonio, Texas.

History

The limestone formations are stunning

First discovered in 1960, the caverns date back to millions of years when they were formed by the compacted layers of sediment carved out by underground water and movement along the Balcones Fault Zone.  Excavations of the caverns have unearthed prehistoric artifacts and tools like spearheads and arrowheads from about 5000 BC that belonged to the native peoples who lived in these parts. Animal remains including the jawbone and femur of black bears over 8000 years old have also been discovered. And while bats are seldom seen now, the guano of bats who once occupied the caverns stain certain areas of the limestone, and their distinctive roosting patches still mark parts of the ceilings where they used to hang upside down to sleep.

Stalagmites and stalactites grow at a rate of about one inch per century. These amazing icicle-like formations captivate onlookers with their unspoiled beauty. The caverns are a tepid 70 degrees Fahrenheit with a humidity level of 99 percent. A guided tour through this hidden domain is made more spectacularly eerie by the lonely dripping of water echoing in the darkness, by the secret grottos nestled within the flowstone, by the emerald pools that collect in the rocky hollows, and by the dim lighting that reflects the crystalline glimmer with spellbinding allure.

Caverns’ Highlights

The murky depths of Grendel’s Canyon where Beowulf’s immortalized monster might dwell

Visitors can expect to see highlights like Grendel’s Canyon that creeps down to a depth of 207 feet, and whose dark shadows might easily conceal the hideous monster from the epic poem Beowulf lurking in the partially obscured cave at the bottom.

King’s Throne is draped in a curtain of stalactites

There is King’s Throne—a thick limestone stalagmite draped with a myriad of smaller stalactites that hang from the seat of the throne with all the palatial grace of an Underworld’s princely dominion.  Then there is the Watchtower—the tallest column in the caverns with a height of 50 feet, that almost looks like melted vanilla ice cream was poured over the formation before it froze once again while dripping down the sides, glinting with the appearance of crushed diamonds in the pallid light.

Another marvel is Castle of the White Giants that rises from a depth of 150 feet and leaves one staring speechless at the limestone creation that dwarfs onlookers with its stunning beauty. And Purgatory Creek that plunges to a depth of 211 feet—the deepest point on the tour—before it disappears below the formations climbing above.

Sherwood Forest beckons with the mystique of a primeval wood

Then there is Sherwood Forest whose columns stand closely together like the tree trunks of a primeval wood, and whose canopy of stalactites hangs from the ceiling with a luminous grandeur of a royal forest that has been frozen in time, perhaps even cast under the ancient spell of a witch or fairy who might still rule this crystal kingdom when no one is around.

This secret kingdom entices visitors with its natural splendor

This is the kind of place where one cannot help staring with a hushed appreciation of the natural splendor that rivals human ingenuity. Everywhere there is something truly magnificent to see, from the craggy narrow passageways that connect the immense chambers, to the lofty domed ceilings of the caverns that beckon with an otherworldly splendor.

While visiting Natural Bridge Caverns, visitors can also test their physical prowess at the outdoor Canopy Challenge obstacle course, or go zip-lining with gorgeous views of the Texas Hill Country which is especially exciting for school-aged children. Younger children and toddlers have a Canopy Kids Course that is made just for them. Snakes 

Rattlesnakes are pit vipers that sense body heat from prey, and hunt mostly at night

Snake aficionados will find themselves in snake heaven because the variety of snakes is impressive. There are boas, pythons, milk snakes, kingsnakes, adders, sidewinders, a black mamba, and a huge anaconda. The anaconda is one of the largest snakes in the world, while the reticulated python is the world’s longest snake. This zoo has everything from small thin snakes to huge intimidating ones that conjure images of the powerful python in Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book who befriends the boy Mowgli.

It was a snake that beguiled Eve in the Garden of Eden, and was subsequently doomed to crawl on its belly and eat dust all the days of its life. It is an animal that is at once feared and revered. And although it has been “charmed” in the practice of snake charming that dates back to times of antiquity in ancient Egypt, it is really we who are mesmerized by these captivating creatures.

Other Reptiles, Arachnids and Big Cats

Bearded dragons are gentle by nature

Alligators, crocodiles, caimans, turtles, tortoises, iguanas, skinks, and bearded dragons are other reptiles guests can expect to see here. Arachnids also live at the zoo, and include tarantulas and scorpions. But that’s not all. Big cats like mountain lions, caracals, and servals lounge in their enclosures, or saunter about with their characteristic feline grace that makes these animals so splendid in every way. The servals resemble cheetahs with their markings and elegant faces, but are smaller.

Large Animals

Zebras, bison and watusi roam a large corralled area near a camel, and regard onlookers with a casual indifference. The watusi are an African breed of cattle with very long horns projecting upwards. Their distinctive horns are so disproportionately large, they can grow up to 8 feet long. One tends to wonder how they have the strength to carry such weight upon their heads, and yet they do so with bovine ease.

Birds

A variety of birds including parrots, peacocks, turkeys, eagle owls, and the domestic variety of chickens and ducks are right at home here. Scarlet Macaws and Blue-and-Gold Macaws eye onlookers curiously from their perches. Macaws are the largest parrots in the world, and are known for their gregarious behavior and colorful plumage.

Monkeys

Like all lemurs, Red Ruffed Lemurs are indigenous to Madagascar

The monkeys are always fun to observe. Perhaps because, as primates, they are the closest relatives to our own human species. Capuchin monkeys, spider monkeys, macaques, and several species of lemurs—which are only found on the island of Madagascar—can also be found here at the zoo.

Hyenas, Wolves & Other Animals

Guests can also see playful otters, warthogs, porcupines, coatimundi (which are related to the raccoon), a fennec fox, spotted hyenas, gray wolves, and capybaras—the world’s largest rodents, among other animals.

The spotted hyenas have a kind of lope when they run, and their movement is as unique as their laughter-like calls, which cannot fail to remind onlookers of their undeserved bad reputation for being craven-hearted scavengers who steal the prey of other animals, when they are actually excellent hunters. These sociable creatures live in hierarchical clan societies dominated by females which are larger than the males, and can run close to 40 mph when chasing prey. They also have the strongest bite of any mammal and digest their prey entirely except for hooves, horns and fur.

Gray wolves live in packs led by a dominant alpha male and female pair

The gray wolves are also a popular favorite. These gorgeous animals have captivated people with their territorial behavior and fierce loyalty to their packs. They are alpha predators with no natural enemies other than humans. Wolves have been depicted in mythology, folklore, literature and heraldry since ancient times, and have come to symbolize leadership, loyalty and strength.

Petting Zoo

The Petting Zoo is the place to get really close to feed, pet and interact with a variety of animals. There are adorable potbellied pigs with their chubby faces and bellies that hang low to the ground. These intelligent creatures are affectionate, playful, easily trained and kept as pets by many people. Goats also wander about the petting zoo, and follow visitors around in hopes of being fed. The baby goats—or kids—are just too cute with their velvety eyes and sweet baby cries. Llamas also wander close by searching for a snack. As part of the camelidae family, they are related to camels, along with alpacas, guanacos and vicunas.

The staff at this zoo is very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. They offer shows, events, animal feedings and encounters that help guests gain a better appreciation and learn so much about the amazing animals that live there. We captured numerous ghostly orbs in some of our photos

Whether it’s the time we spent living in New Orleans or our obsession with Halloween, Dad and I just love ghost tours. Wandering deserted streets late at night as our guide spins intricate tales of long-ago tragedies, it is easy to feel like we are stepping back through time. We make it a priority to seek out ghost hunts everywhere we go. Our range of experiences includes making our way through an incredibly creepy basement in Savannah Georgia; climbing a fire escape to peek at a cage once used for female criminals in Jerome, Arizona; and traveling the streets of St. Augustine in a customized hearse. But our tour with Alamo City Ghost Tours in San Antonio, Texas, was one of the most interactive and scientific we have ever experienced.

About Alamo City Ghost Tours

The tour begins across from the Alamo, outside the Ripley’s Believe It or Not Museum. The walk covers 13 haunted locations over a distance of approximately one mile. As of 2011, tours depart nightly at 9 pm and last approximately 2.5 hours. Admission is $15 for adults and $10 for kids aged 5 to 17. Younger children are free. Wheelchairs and strollers are welcome on the tour.

Our Experience

Dad and I spent a long, hot summer day exploring downtown San Antonio, and were very glad for a long dinner and rest break before the tour began. We arrived at the meeting spot around 8:30 and were able to check in with our guide, J.R., who is also the company owner, at about 8:45.

Many ghost hunts focus on creepy guides and smooth storytelling methods. We were immediately struck by the more scientific presentation offered by Alamo City Ghost Tours. Once everyone was checked in, J.R. distributed EMF meters and thermal meters to everyone, and went over how to use them. He also spoke a bit about paranormal investigation and his own involvement in the field. He stressed that we might or might not capture any paranormal activity and explained some of the non-paranormal reasons for unusual EMF readings (electrical interference is particularly common).

We walked at a reasonably brisk but comfortable pace, and stops were frequent. In each location, J.R. gave us the history of the spot and encouraged us to use our ghost hunting equipment. While many ghost tours build the stories up a bit for maximum drama, J.R. stuck to the documented historical reality. This in no way detracted from the tour, however, as the real-life history of San Antonio proved suitably exciting.

The dowsing rod experiments were quite engaging

Roughly midway through the tour, we stopped by the river, where J.R. brought out a dowsing rod. Used in divination since at least the early 1500s, dowsing rods are sometimes thought to be conduits to the supernatural. J.R. explained several theories on how they work, including both paranormal and more mundane possibilities. He performed a few experiments with a volunteer from the group, and then handed out several rods for us to play with. The results were mixed, which J.R. explained is common, particularly on a night as windy as that one.

After the tour, J.R. stuck around for awhile to answer questions, give directions and simply chat. The tour ends several blocks from where it began, so be sure to ask for directions to your car or hotel if you are unfamiliar with the city.

Tips for Parents

The tour was highly interactive

As a scientific and historic tour, Alamo City Ghost Tours is entirely appropriate for children. Although tales of murder and mayhem are, by necessity, fairly graphic, the tour does not sensationalize them. The stories are well researched and told simply and honestly. The focus is definitely on the investigative elements as everyone works together to see if any evidence of a haunting is present.

The thermal readers use lasers, similar to laser pointers, and can be damaging if pointed directly into someone’s eyes. Although guests are encouraged to use the readers liberally, there are a few ground rules, such as not pointing them at oncoming traffic or pedestrians. Make sure your kids understand and follow the rules, for everyone’s safety.

Tour group sizes are not as severely restricted by law in San Antonio as they are in other places, and groups of 50 are not uncommon. If you are in a bigger group, keep a close eye on your kids. Although the guides go out of their way to ensure everyone’s safety, you are walking dark streets at night. Try not to let smaller kids get lost in the crowd.

Kerrville is quaint and picturesque

When Dad and I traveled through the American Southwest in the summer of 2011, we did a lot of base camping–staying in membership campgrounds, federal lands or state parks within an hour of major cities. This allowed us to pay lower nightly rates and explore the countryside, rather than exclusively focusing on known tourist destinations. For our trip to San Antonio, Texas, we chose a membership park in Medina Lake, an hour outside of town. While there, we met a family that lived nearby. They suggested that we take a day trip to Kerrville, approximately 45 minutes from Medina Lake and an hour from San Antonio. The town proved well worth the drive.

About Kerrville

The former home of Charles Schreiner is now a grand museum

Located in the heart of Texas Hill Country, Kerrville was founded as a shingle-making camp in 1846. Kerr County was established ten years later. Interestingly, the town was named not for its first resident, Joshua Brown, but for his friend, Major James Kerr. Historical records indicate that although Major Kerr, who was born in Kentucky, eventually settled in Texas, he never actually set foot in the region that bears his name.

The shingle business proved an instant success, driving Kerrville to prosperity and expansion. In 1857, a pair of millwrights started a grist and saw mill in town, providing reliable power and going on to become one of the biggest operations in that portion of Texas. In 1869, entrepreneur and former Texas Ranger Charles Schreiner moved in, opening a general store and eventually expanding into a wide range of business sectors.

Kerrville boomed following the Civil War, becoming a key player in the cattle industry. Unlike many Wild West towns, which focused primarily on a single industry and folded when that industry was no longer needed, Kerrville continued to grow and diversify throughout the 20th century. Today the town is home to just over 20,000 year-round residents.

Like all of Texas, Kerrville gets quite warm during the summer months. The temperature was around 105 on the day of our visit, but a brisk wind kept us from being too hot. Our first stop was the Visitor Center, conveniently located downtown. After picking up brochures and recommendations from the helpful staff, we wandered outside and down the block, poking around in interesting shops and reading restaurant menus. The town is quaint and beautifully manicured, and every local we encountered was extremely friendly and welcoming.

After a not-so-brief detour into a wonderfully well-stocked used bookstore, we made our way to the Hill Country Museum. Housed in the former home of Charles Schreiner, the museum is open only limited hours–Thursday through Saturday from 11:30 to 3:00, as of 2011. The docent was actually running a bit late that day, but when she opened the doors at around 11:40, she warmly welcomed us and apologized for the delay.

The docent gave us a brief guided overview and then allowed us to explore the museum at our leisure. She had detailed responses ready for every question and offered fascinating tidbits about Kerrville’s early history. When she saw that we had more than a passing interest, she pulled out old record books and other documents and allowed us to peruse them at length. Be sure to ask about the old phone on the wall for a special surprise!

The museum’s collection features a wealth of artifacts that tell the history of the town’s affluent past. Unlike many historic collections, items were accessible rather than hidden behind glass. Children are welcome, but keep a close eye on them, as many of the artifacts are priceless today.

On a recommendation from a local, we stopped for lunch at the excellent and low-priced Hill Country Café. Featuring honest home cooking and friendly wait staff, the spot is a wonderful choice for families. After lunch, we headed to the Museum of Western Art.

The Museum of Modern Art is a true must-see

Opened in 1983, the museum is a work of art in its own right. The building is designed as a fortressed hacienda, flanked by life-sized bronze works outside. Inside, the museum features mesquite wood and Saltillo tile floors, along with brick arches and other artisan touches.

As of 2011, the Museum of Western Art is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 to 4. Admission is $7 for adults, $6 for seniors aged 65 and above, $5 for students, $4 for military members with ID, and free for kids aged 8 and below.

The museum is dedicated to Western artists who tell the story of the West’s past and present. Cowboys, Native Americans, pioneers and explorers are all given equal recognition, and some exhibits focus on the women of the West. Special exhibits, tours and educational programs are frequently offered, so be sure to ask what might be going on during your visit.

After leaving the museum, Dad and I headed to the Guadalupe River. A covered overlook provided informational signs on the history of Kerrville along with comfortable benches with a great view of the water. It was a terrific spot to end the day.

Tips for Parents

Clean, safe and slow-paced, Kerrville, Texas is a relaxing respite from the hubbub of San Antonio. Warm, welcoming locals, interesting things to do and plenty of space for kids to play make the town well-worth a day trip. Keep an eye on your kids as you would in any unfamiliar town, but allow them the freedom to explore.

Wear comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen and a hat, particularly if you visit during the long, hot summer. Cafés and shops are easy to find and virtually everyplace sells inexpensive bottled water. Stop frequently to rest, and ensure that everyone remains well hydrated.

The Buckhorn and Texas Ranger Museum is three attractions in one

When Dad and I planned this summer’s road trip through the American Southwest, we created a loose itinerary based on major attractions. The Alamo is one the Old West’s most famous sites, so we planned a trip to San Antonio, Texas. When we got to San Antonio, we were happily surprised to discover a plethora of attractions within easy walking distance of the Alamo’s downtown location. One of the most interesting was the Buckhorn Saloon and Texas Ranger Museum.

The Buckhorn is sort of three attractions in one. The Buckhorn Saloon, opened in 1881, has changed little since its inception. Most of the original furnishings remain, offering tourists a wonderful opportunity to enjoy a local brew at the same bar once frequented by Pancho Villa and Teddy Roosevelt. An attached café is open for lunch.

The Buckhorn Museum, located on the second floor, has its roots in the 19th century. Buckhorn Saloon founder Albert Friedrich accepted antlers and horns in lieu of payment for drinks, while his wife accepted rattlesnake rattles for use in her artwork. As the collection grew, the museum was born.

The Texas Ranger Museum is a new addition to the first floor. The museum houses hundreds of authentic artifacts related to the Rangers, but the most interesting section is the indoor recreation of turn-of-the-century San Antonio.

Our Experience

Dad and I arrived at the Buckhorn in mid-afternoon after a few hours at the Alamo. Although the place looked fascinating, I admit that I was partly motivated by the promise of cold air-conditioning. It was well over 100 degrees, and most of the Alamo exhibits are outside!

As of 2011, admission is $16 for adults and $12 for children. Your ticket includes both the Buckhorn Museum and the Texas Ranger Museum. There is no charge to look around the Saloon and Café. Check with the nearby tourist information center or any of several discount booths for a coupon worth $1 or $2 per person.

After obtaining our tickets, we went through a turnstile for the self-guided tour. Directional signs lead you through the two floors of exhibits, making it impossible to get lost. Upon entering the museum, we were immediately overwhelmed by the sheer amount of “stuff.” Antique mirrors, a vast quantity of antlers and a mind-boggling array of saddles were among the first exhibits.

As we continued our journey, it became clear that this is not the right place to visit if you are morally opposed to hunting. A huge portion of the Buckhorn Museum is dedicated to Bill Negley, the only man to have taken all of Africa’s “Big Five” with a bow and arrow. When we arrived, we had no idea what the Big Five might be, but we soon learned that it is a hunting term referring to the five most ferocious and difficult to kill African animals–lion, elephant, buffalo, rhino and leopard. Taxidermied specimens of these animals, along with dozens of others, fill massive rooms. Though I do not personally care for hunting, it was pretty interesting to imagine taking down these animals with only a bow and arrow. Mixed in among the animal specimens were various animal skulls, Native American artifacts and an impressive collection of weapons. This section of the museum reminded me of the German hunting club in the 1995 PC game Gabriel Knight 2: The Beast Within.

American Sideshows

Continuing through the Alaska room with its endless mounted fish, polar bear and moose, we left the taxidermy behind. Next up were the newer exhibits based on the American Sideshow. Traditionally, sideshows were secondary acts presented alongside a traveling carnival. They were popularized in the mid-1800s and lasted through the early 1960s. Changing public tastes and increasing regulations largely killed the traditional sideshow. In the late 20th century, however, a new breed of sideshow emerged–self-proclaimed “freaks” performing bizarre and dangerous feats for public entertainment. The new sideshows are not necessarily connected to carnivals, but may be feature acts in their own right.

Although relatively small, the Buckhorn exhibit was impressive. Through the magic of modern technology, both P.T. Barnum and Buffalo Bill Cody welcomed us to their shows. Helpful informational signs provided a brief history of both men’s illustrious careers. A combination of old posters and actual exhibits introduced us to some of the most famous sideshow exhibits including Elmer McCurdy, the executed outlaw whose corpse was displayed in carnivals and dark rides until 1977, and the FeeJee Mermaid, possibly the most famous sideshow hoax ever.

Carnival of Curiosities

Leaving Barnum and Cody behind, we came upon a recreated mystery spot called the Carnival of Curiosities. Mystery spots were all the rage during the early days of automobile travel, but only a few remain today. Mystery spots are always housed in strange little cabins that are slightly tilted. The back story, explained at the beginning of the attraction, always has something to do with a mudslide or other natural phenomenon, thereby explaining the tilt. Inside the shack, strange things happen–water travels uphill, people lean or sway in strange directions, and impossible gravity effects are achieved. Some spots claim a paranormal explanation, usually based on ley lines or vortexes, while others leave it to the tourists to explain.

The Buckhorn recreation followed all the traditional mystery spot rules. The highly entertaining and interactive exhibit gave us the chance to pose in impossible positions, play in an eerie mine and scratch our heads at all sorts of gravity-defying effects. Outside the shack was a collection of optical illusions, complete with explanations.

Back on the first floor, it was time for the Texas Ranger Museum. The first couple of rooms are packed with paintings, informational signs and life-size figures depicting the history of the Texas Rangers. Although the information was quite interesting, we were starting to feel overwhelmed. The next room, though, was literally jaw-dropping.

As we went through the doorway, we found ourselves in late-1800s San Antonio. The sheriff’s office, feed lot, jail, bank, telegraph office and a variety of shops were among the highlights. Wanted posters depicting famous outlaws hung on the walls, and most of the buildings were open for perusal. Around the corner, we found ourselves staring at the Bonnie and Clyde car, followed by an extensive display on outlaws through the ages.

Tips for Parents

The collection of Texas Ranger artifacts is huge

The Buckhorn complex is much bigger than we anticipated. Expecting to kill an hour or so, we were inside for better than three hours. The entire museum is surprisingly interactive. Even the oldest hunting section offers a series of fascinating videos, and the newer exhibits provide hands-on entertainment.

It is impossible to leave without walking through the remainder of the museum, making it difficult to come and go. Plan to visit when you have plenty of time to spend. Restrooms are available inside. There are benches scattered throughout, providing the chance to sit down and take a break.

With so much to look at and interact with, the Buckhorn is a great choice for families. Follow your kids’ lead and don’t expect them to fully absorb everything. With a bit of patience and a relaxed attitude, the Buckhorn could easily fill an entire afternoon. Although the main path utilizes the grand staircase, an elevator is available, making the museum fully wheelchair-accessible.

Downtown San Antonio grew up around the Alamo

In virtually every way, San Antonio, Texas is a modern big city. One of the most populous and fastest growing cities in the nation, San Antonio offers medical research facilities, Fortune 500 companies, dozens of schools and colleges, and a mind-boggling array of tourist spots. Looking out over San Antonio’s downtown skyline, it is amazing to realize that the city was literally built around a single historic structure.

The Alamo

Settled by the Spanish in 1716, San Antonio originally consisted primarily of a series of missions protected by a fortified base called a presidio. Mission San Antonio de Valero was the first Spanish mission in San Antonio, founded in 1718 along the San Antonio River. The mission was secularized and then abandoned in the 1790s. The Mexican War of Independence gave control of Texas to Mexico, and Mexican forces occupied the mission from the early 1800s until the Texas Revolution. It is believed that the Mexican army changed the mission’s name to Alamo.

Under Mexican rule, Texas became part of a new state, Coahuila y Tejas, whose capital was hundreds of miles away. Sparsely populated and in need of settlers, Texas extended an open invitation to United States citizens who wanted to start a new life. Americans responded in a big way, and “Gone to Texas” signs appeared on homes and businesses throughout the United States.

Soon settlers from the United States vastly outnumbered Mexican-born citizens. Feeling increasingly isolated and disillusioned, Texas residents wanted to split from Coahuila to become a separate Mexican state. When Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna became president of Mexico in 1833, however, he implemented a number of policies that were unacceptable to Texas. Increasingly, residents desired all-out revolution and independence from Mexico.

In 1835, Santa Anna issued a decree that all state militias should be dissolved. He insisted that the militia in Gonzales, Texas return a cannon previously given to them by Mexico in 1831. Defiantly, the militia responded to Santa Anna’s request: “Come and take it.” Mexican troops were dispatched to retrieve the cannon, but Texas forces were ready for them. The Battle of Gonzales, fought on October 2, 1835, was the first skirmish of the Texas Revolution.

By January 1836, Texas forces had established a small garrison of less than 100 men at the Alamo. On January 14, acting Alamo commander Colonel James C. Neill requested assistance from Sam Houston, unofficial head of the entire Texas army. Lacking the resources to replenish the garrison, Houston sent Colonel James Bowie (who popularized the Bowie knife) with a small force to salvage artillery from the Alamo and close it down. However, Neill convinced Bowie that the Alamo’s strategic location made defending it crucial. On Bowie’s request, a handful of additional men were dispatched to the garrison, including David Crockett (who spawned the legend of Davy Crockett).

Soon an army of 1500 Mexican soldiers took the nearby town of Bexar and set their sights on the Alamo. Though they knew they were outnumbered and likely to die, the men of the Alamo garrison refused to surrender. Legend has it that William Travis, who took command when Neill departed in search of reinforcements, drew a line in the sand. He asked all who were willing to die for the cause to cross the line. All but one did so, most with little hesitation.

The Battle of San Jacinto won the Texas Revolution

Skirmishes erupted for 12 days, beginning on February 23. On March 6, the Mexican army launched a full assault on the Alamo. The garrison repelled two attacks, but the third breached the defenses. By 6:30 a.m. the battle was over. A few women and children who had taken refuge in the Alamo and a slave man named Joe were allowed to depart. Everyone else was killed.

Three weeks later, a portion of the Texas army was forced to surrender during the Goliad Campaign. On Palm Sunday, March 27, under direct orders from Santa Anna, the prisoners of war were murdered by Mexican forces in what has been termed the Goliad Massacre.

The defeat at the Alamo and the massacre at Goliad marked a turning point in the Texas Revolution. On April 21, despite being outnumbered, Texas troops under the command of Sam Houston used the element of surprise for a decisive victory at the Battle of San Jacinto. Soldiers shouted “Remember the Alamo!” and “Remember Goliad!” as they dove into the melee. After just 18 minutes, it was over. Santa Anna was captured, and Sam Houston agreed to save his life in exchange for Texas independence.

The modern city of San Antonio literally grew up around the Alamo. Today, the historic mission is in the center of downtown, across the street from the Ripley’s Believe It or Not museums. Much of the original complex no longer exists, but visitors can tour the chapel, barracks building and grounds. Across the street, beside the museums, a series of low walls serve as benches for tired sightseers. Take a close look at the signs around the walls. These are actually pieces of the original Alamo complex.

Inside the Alamo chapel, docents ask visitors to respect their environment as a sacred space. Out front, however, vendors hawk snacks and audio tours while photographers take advantage of the entry queue to snap the obligatory “I went to the Alamo” pictures, conveniently available for sale.

There was already a long line by the time Dad and I arrived at roughly 10:30 a.m. Free, or even close, parking is nearly impossible to obtain, so we settled on a $10 lot a few blocks away. We joined the snaking line, already extending to the chapel’s corner. The line moved relatively quickly, and we were inside by 11:00. There is no admission fee, but we decided to rent the audio tour. At a cost of $6 per person (2011 pricing), we felt that the historical descriptions were well worth the money.

It was a smart decision. We would have been lost without the tour. There are informational signs in most spots, but it can be difficult to get close enough to read them in the crowded building. With the tour, we were able to step back from each display and listen to the narration, and then step forward for a quick look.

Though the chapel building was packed with tourists, the much larger grounds area had plenty of room for everyone to spread out. The beautifully manicured grounds, with restrooms and vending machines at the back, provided a shady oasis to rest and relax. Narrated presentations are offered throughout the day.

The former barracks is now a museum filled with artifacts. A short film presentation, offered multiple times throughout the day, tells the story of the Alamo in a succinct, easy to follow way. Docents are on hand to share information or answer questions, and the audio tour continues throughout the building.

Don’t be put off by the chaotic scene and long lines in the entrance plaza. Once you make it through the chapel doors, you will enter a world where history is respected and celebrated. The Alamo is a critical part of American history, and deserves to be shared with the next generation.

There were a lot of families with small children on the day we visited, and the kids seemed absolutely enraptured. The Alamo offers a lot to see and do, providing an educational and entertaining experience for all ages.

With so much to absorb, though, take full advantage of the outdoor areas. There is plenty of space to sprawl out and relax or run and play. Taking frequent breaks from the history overload can keep everyone refreshed and recharged. Keep your family hydrated as well. It was extremely hot and dry on the day we visited, and many people looked close to collapse. Carry a water bottle to refill at the fountains, or purchase cold beverages at the vending machines. Pack a few snacks as well, as you are likely to spend longer than you anticipate.

San Antonio, TX

On our recent trip to Austin Texas, one of the must-sees on my list was San Antonio.  I figured my last vacation to the city didn’t count as I was only three years old at the time!  I have pictures of myself running around the Alamo, chasing birds and felt it would be kind of cool to see my three-year old running around doing the same thing.  So, on the fourth day of our visit to Texas my little family and my mother-in-law hopped in the car and made the hour and half drive to visit historic San Antonio.  

The first thing we found upon arriving at the city was that we were once again faced with a parking situation, (see the article Downtown Austin and the Children’s Museum).  Just like in Austin, we had to either park in one of the very limited spots along the street or pay to park in a lot or garage.  We ended up parking in a large lot (it was only $5 so that wasn’t bad) about a block from the Alamo.  I strapped our three-month old into her front pack, plopped my son into a borrowed stroller and off we went!

As it was already after twelve o’clock by the time we arrived, we decided to head straight for the River Walk (about 3 ½ blocks from our parking lot), to eat before checking out the Alamo.  I had a few limited memories of my last visit to the Alamo, but I had absolutely none of the River Walk and I was taken off guard by just how beautiful it was!  To access it from the street, we had to head down two flights of stairs before emerging onto the scene below.  There we saw the San Antonio River winding along serenely between the shops, hotels, and restaurants that line its rock-walled banks.  Stone bridges arched over the water at intervals allowing pedestrian crossing from one side to the other while long, flat tour boats drifted past on the river below.  Large trees provided both ambiance and shade as they hung over the water and walkways along side it.

We walked along the river a short ways before picking a small Mexican restaurant for lunch and seating ourselves at a table next to the river.  As we ate, our son pointed out a Mariachi group strolling down the walkway.  He’s been quite taken with that style of music ever since attending a wedding in Acapulco more than a year ago and was excited to see that they were coming our way.  They stop and play only when someone “hires” them and fortunately, a table next to ours decided that they’d like to be serenaded.  This group had only string instruments with them but they were absolutely wonderful!  Our son had a blast dancing next to the table while they played their two songs before moving on.  

When we’d finished our lunch, we went out to explore the rest of the River Walk.  After passing a number of quaint restaurants and river-front hotels, we decided to cross a bridge to the other side.  There we found the ticket booth for the boat rides.  Although we were very tempted to take one,  (adult tickets were $8.25 and child tickets ages 1-5 were only $2), we weren’t all that sure that our three-year old would sit still during the 35 minute ride.

Even though he loved pointing out every single boat that floated past us (and there had to be a million of them), we weren’t sure that we were up to trying one ourselves.  Instead we continued on down the walkway until we came to a series of small shops selling everything from candy and souvenirs to clothing and sunglasses.  We enjoyed browsing for a while then decided it was time to head back up to the street and the Alamo.

We’d been warned before visiting the Alamo that it was “a lot smaller than it looks.”  This was true in some ways but not in others.  The front of the Alamo itself sits in a short plaza just off the street, on the other side of which are a number of restaurants, museums, and hotels.  Once you step inside the Alamo Shrine or walk through the gates on either side of it though, the grounds are actually fairly extensive.  They’re also very beautiful.  Green grass covers the lawns and large draping trees hang over the sidewalks and benches set around them.  At the very back of the property is a kind of “rest area” with a picnic table, benches, vending machines, and the bathrooms.  It’s a great place to sit and enjoy the view of the grounds.  We walked the outside perimeter of the Alamo property (while our son chased the birds), before heading into the buildings.  A large gift shop and museum sits just next to the Alamo Shrine and we walked through there first then headed over to the shrine itself.  There are no pictures allowed inside this building or inside the Long Barracks, so be warned!  We saw a curator reprimand a tourist from all the way across the room for taking a picture of one of the displays!

While our son did a great job at not touching anything he wasn’t supposed to, the Alamo didn’t have anything that was particularly interesting to a three-year old.  My husband, my mother-in-law, and I enjoyed the buildings and history very much but our son had a lot more fun walking around the grounds and laughing at the birds.  He also liked looking at some of the swords and guns in the display cases, but my husband had to carry him so he could be up high enough to see.  He did like the gift shop as well though since a number of the little Texas related novelties and Alamo toys they had were more at his eye level.  

I felt our entire San Antonio experience was very family friendly.  Though we did have to park in a paid lot, it wasn’t far from either of our destinations and really our son would have done fine even without a stroller.  All of the restaurants along the River Walk had outside seating which was perfect because it gave our son something to look at and talk about while we waited for our food and ate lunch.  There were no lines to wait in or buses to take so the entire day was fairly relaxing and very enjoyable.  We’re looking forward to taking our kids back and doing it all again when our daughter is old enough to enjoy it too!
