The village is south of Salvo and north of Buxton on Hatteras Island. The United States Postal Service has assigned Avon the ZIP Code 27915.

Buxton - Buxton, Buxton is an community of nearly 1,500 people on Hatteras Island near Cape Hatteras, . It is located in Dare County in the U.S. state of North Carolina. North Carolina Highway 12 links the community to other Outer Banks communities such as Avon, Frisco, and Hatteras, . Buxton is most famous for being the location of Cape Hatteras Light, and prides itself as being the home of the Cape Hatteras Anglers Club.

Cape Hatteras - , Cape Hatteras, Cape Hatteras is a cape on the coast of North Carolina. It is the point that protrudes the farthest to the southeast along the northeast-to-southwest line of the Atlantic coast of North America. Two major Atlantic currents collide just off Cape Hatteras, the southerly-flowing cold water Labrador Current and the northerly-flowing warm water Florida Current, creating turbulent waters and a large expanse of shallow sandbars extending up to 14 miles offshore.

Ocracoke, North Carolina - Ocracoke, Ocracoke is a census-designated place and town located at the southern end of Ocracoke Island, located entirely within Hyde County, North Carolina. The population was 769 as of the 2000 census. It is also the reputed location of Blackbeard's death.

Portsmouth - , Portsmouth, Portsmouth was a remote fishing and shipping village that can be found on the north end of Portsmouth Island in far eastern Carteret County, North Carolina. The town was established in 1753, and abandoned in 1971. The site and buildings became part of Cape Lookout National Seashore in 1976, and are now on the National Register of Historic Places. Prior to the Civil War, ships often stopped at Portsmouth to transfer cargo to smaller vessels that could navigate the shallow waters of Pamlico Sound.

Rodanthe, along with Waves and Salvo, are part of the settlement of Chicamacomico. Rodanthe includes the original Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station, decommissioned in 1954, but now a museum.
