Let’s face it. White sandy beaches have always had their appeal. But there is something primitively passionate about the black sand of volcanic beaches. The volcanic history of Santorini has produced gorgeous beaches. Unlike the tame and tranquil allure of white powdery sand, Kamari Beach possesses a harsh beauty reminiscent of prehistoric times. It is located on the island’s east coast, about four miles south of Fira. The sand can get quite hot, so it’s best to come prepared with appropriate footwear. Sports rentals are available including kayaks and jet skis, while umbrellas and cabanas can also be rented. The beach is close to many hotels, taverns, shops and restaurants in the town of Kamari, making it a fun place to explore for a day.

RED BEACH

Another gorgeous beach with primitive appeal, Red Beach is located by Ancient Akrotiri. It owes its name to the reddish color of its volcanic sand. It too has taverns and cafes, but is much more secluded than Kamari Beach. The color of the water is a stunning turquoise against the backdrop of the volcanic sand and the red cliffs rising from sea like something chiseled with a rough precision of an artist’s creative hand. But its secluded location requires a bit of a hike to get there. Nevertheless, it is well worth the effort. You will not be disappointed.

AMOUDI BAY

The sunsets in Santorini are legendary

Located in the town of Oia, the fishing port of Amoudi Bay offers breathtaking views of the caldera. This tranquil spot is nestled within steep cliffs overlooking the serene basin whose azure waters reflect the brilliance of the Aegean Sea with a timeless splendor. There are 300 steps descending from the top of Oia, and a very worthwhile trek, though some visitors opt to travel on the back of an obliging donkey. This quaint site features a rocky beach, restaurants, taverns and cafes, but its natural beauty is what makes it so appealing. The sunsets from this part of the island are legendary, drawing visitors from everywhere as the sun descends in a glory of passionate reds and golds before dipping into the horizon beyond sea.

Built high on the edge of the clifftops of Santorini, Katikies Hotel captures the magic of this Greek Island with sweeping views of the Aegean Sea, whitewashed villas, and old world charm that make a stay here as unforgettable as the island of Santorini itself.

Katikies Hotel overlooking the Caldera basin

Katikies is discreetly opulent with all the modern conveniences of a five-star hotel. Yet unlike the high rises dotting the beaches of many popular destinations around the world, this jewel is private, uncrowded, and simply stunning. It overlooks the peaceful waters of the Caldera basin, inspiring a kind of euphoria.

View from our accommodations

The accommodations are charming and ultra-luxurious in a timeless style perfectly complementing the location of the island and its breathtaking backdrop against the azure waters of the sea. The rooms and suites face the caldera with spectacular views. Gentle breezes fill the spacious accommodations and private terraces. Amenities include free Wi-Fi, twice-daily maid service, iPod & Docking station, satellite TV, 24-hour room service and more. Additional hotel features include a spa, infinity pools overlooking the caldera, and gourmet dining with views of the water.

View from our private terrace

When we first arrived to the hotel late one mid-September morning several years back, we practically glided down the steps to our suite, overcome with rapture at the expansive views that simply stole our breath away. There was a glorious tranquility to the air. Potted bougainvillea cascaded in long tendrils with their fuchsia and red blooms lending a riot of color to the pristine white-washed walls. The sea shone resplendent under the late summer sun. It was something out of a painting whose subject comes alive in a rhapsody of light and color.

Every morning we would have a light breakfast of coffee, toast, jam and fruit, while seated under the shaded terrace of an outdoor restaurant in the hotel, dining al fresco as we stared out over the caldera, contemplating its splendor in the stillness of the hour. We would then venture out, armed with our cameras, to explore the beautiful architecture and churches, shops, boutiques and taverns of the town. Sometimes we would roam about the cobbled streets on foot, other times renting a car to drive around the island.

Katikies Hotel captures the romance and charm of Santorini

Without a doubt, Katikies makes for a romantic getaway to the beautiful island of Santorini. It is the perfect place to get lost in the idyllic charm of the Grecian Islands.

The hotel is conveniently located in Santorini’s quaint town of Oia, walking distance to local shops, boutiques, art galleries, and restaurants featuring fresh Greek specialties. Visitors can also rent a car to tour the island’s many sites.
